Spiders! In the garden and inside home

Hello everyone, we live in a rented house. The house has a big garden (big by London standards). The house was refurbished just before we rented it. But the owners didn't do anything about the garden. So it has been overgrown and a mess since years! And there are lots of spiders. I come from a small town and we had huge gardens and I have never seen so many spiders. If you just move the soil a little, you can see just tons of them. And while it's not a lot in the house but still we do get a few very often. They are of all shapes and sizes! I am very scared of spiders and I don't know what to do about them.
We now want to fix the garden space since we will be living here for atleast an year and we really want to use the garden with a small child. And I don't know how to go about it. What do I do about the spiders? Can someone please help? Thanks.

Can you borrow a couple of cats or encourage them to come into your backyard somehow? In my experience there’s nothing better to get rid of spiders!

@GrumpyHoonMain, couple of neighborhood cats do visit our garden often. Maybe for the spiders.
But there are lots, I don't think the cats alone can tackle it since there are just lots and the cats have been coming in for the many months we have stayed here.
We have left the garden overgrown since it requires a lot of work. We were also hoping the owner would get something done but he has refused. So we need to start working on it to make it usable.

i live in a big house and although i keep it clean and get the windows cleaned, spiders have been a massive problem for us to. literally a few hours after the windows are cleaned they start rebuilding their cobwebs. twice a year they have babies all over our living room!. our house is south facing and gets the full sun all day. i'm convinced that has something to do with it! they must like the warmth.

ive heard you can spray peppermint oil and plant mint near the windows. i have done that this year but still have spiders everywhere

Is there any slate in the garden? The previous owners of our house cover the front and back gardens entirely in purple slate. The house was inundated with spiders and the windows front and back were covered in webs despite frequent cleaning. I'm not bothered particularly by spiders, but I hated moving or stepping on the slate outside as when I did it was literally teeming with them! The gardeners who eventually reside our garden and removed all slate said they'd never seen so many spiders in one place in their life! I'd get on with sorting the garden as soon as you can, it will massively reduce their numbers I think.

@mklanch, oh that sounds so irritating. We also had tiny spiders all over once and it was horrible. I was hoping that there was something we could do to get rid of the spiders.

@lazyakita, don't think we have slate. But there are lot of slabs and one was loose and we turned it and there were so many insects and spiders underneath. The garden requires a lot of work, so much that I think we will need to hire professionals. And that's been holding us back because of the cost since it's a rental. But I know if we want to use the garden, we will have to get it done.

We live in a old house with spiders. I would second the cat suggestion.

Birds eat spiders - authoritatively based on 'There was an old lady who swallowed a fly... '

I suspect the garden is too overgrown for birds to get to the spiders.

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat, sadly not many birds around where we live. And I don't think they will go off naturally. There are just too many spiders!
