Smell next door from decomposing animal

hi all,

At my wits end. The property next door to me has been empty for about 4 year and someone has dumped a bag containing a dead cat/dog in their yard. Its filled with maggots and surrounded with flies and we can't open any of our windows due to the horrific smell. Its so warm at the minute too its unbearable.
Being told by council/environmental health and police that there's nothing they can do. Councils environmental health have said because its not on council property it would be up to the landlord/owner and it would take a while to find out who is responsible. Meanwhile we just have to put up with it.

Any advice welcome as I've been down every avenue I can think of!

In that case, Could you pay someone to do it? I remember a thread on here about a dead animal in a paddling pool and I'm sure that lady paid someone to come and dispose of it (they couldn't get to it in the end if I remember rightly).
Maybe try pest control in your area and see what they say.

I'm a pest controller (yes a female one haha) I'd bet anything there are rats in the garden too. As a pest controller I'd come and pick it up but I'd also suggest laying bait boxes in your garden also as I guarantee next door and then in turn your garden has rats.

I'd also contact environmental health and your local council who have enforcement powers to get owners of empty houses to maintain them and use them.

Ridiculous that there isn't just some way of finding out what estate agents have the property.

Paid £3 for land registry to try find the owner but that just gives his address so would have to wait for a letter to get across to Ireland from NE England. Checked social media to no avail

Pest control companies won't come because it would be trespassing without owners permission

Put on some rubber gloves and a mask and go and deal with it yourself. If you aren't prepared to do that it can't be that bad or you would just to get rid of the smell.

But if you don't move it yourself it'll not go anywhere will it? You could be waiting months for it to decompose/be eaten enough by maggots for the smell to go. Then there's the rats, and the flies that have feasted on it coming in your house 🤮 buy a pair of decorating overalls from Wilko, a decent face mask, thick rubber gloves, and wear wellies. Scrap it up on to a shovel, and take a big bucket of water and disinfect to slosh the yard down. Also lay the rat traps.

You're going to have to get rid of it yourself as soon as possible. Are environmental health seriously not concerned?
What about other neighbours being affected by the smell and the flies? It must be horrendous in this heat.

Old clothes on, face mask with toothpaste round your nose, double gloves and several large plastic bags to make sure no ick gets on you. Best of luck @Fizzymoon67

Or pay a pest controller, pretending it's your property. Are you able to access it?

Or as suggested on another thread about a dead thing as on Facebook for some one to do. Is there any soil in the garden someone could dig a swap hole and shove it in?

Is it near any plants or buildings? Could you set fire to it?

Rubber gloves, vicks round your nose and head round with a spade so you can scoop it up and not have to touch the bag. Drop it into two or three layered bin bags.

It would take less than five minutes, certainly less time and effort than writing to the landlord.

Failing that, I’d offer £20-30 on my local Facebook buy and sale for anyone who would dispose of it for me.

Surely this is a short term problem. The maggots will have this stripped clean in days and then you'll have no smell.

Yes, i think I’d have to have a go at bagging it myself. I’d plonk it in their wheely bin and make sure it went out on bin day.
