Floor tiles that look like wooden floorboards

We are renovating and have a large area of flooring to cover downstairs - hallway and large open plan kitchen/diner/lounge. i really like the tiles that look like wooden floorboards. Has anyone here had them? Would you recommend them or not and if not for what reasons.

For me, the main pros seem to be how durable they are but I am worried about them being cold. We will not be having underfloor heating. Thank you in advance for any info on this!

I have just put some in the kitchen diner and they look amazing. No idea how cold they will be in winter as we dont have underfloor heating either. It's so easy to keep clean

I've got some from Topps in the bathroom. I love them. They look great, very durable and non slip

However we have LVT in our kitchen/diner and I'd recommend that more for a kitchen!

We’ve got them, installed last year, I’m very pleased with them (especially as I’ve seen what the kids do to the floor and know real wood would’ve been heavily marked by now)

However we do have ufh so I can’t comment on temperature in the winter. We had stone floors previously with no ufh and it was arctic in winter.

One other option is LVT (Karndean, Polyfloor, Floorify). This is much tougher than wood but warm unlike tile. It is plastic... but some look much less plasticky than others.

We've got them downstairs. Easy to just put the mop over to clean but it does get cold. If we were going to do it again I would either have laminate or underfloor heating

I’ve seen some in Porcelanosa that look reasonably decent but the real deal would always look better anyway.

If you don’t want underfloor heating or real wood, then ‘luxury’ vinyl would feel warm but be durable.

A little bit cold feeling underfoot, cooler than laminate, but not freezing, but look great, and are super hard wearing / easy to clean.

We’re going for lvt in a similar room.
We’ve got a toddler and expecting another baby and I want something softer for them and I feel tiles will be too cold.

I have them in a bathroom with UFH. They look great, even though I stupidly put white grout with dark wood effect tiles (don't do that!)

I think they'd be very cold without UFH.

Hmm sounds like we need UFH. Havent budgeted for it 😫 but having freezing floors would be horrible.

I will look into the LVT. I have seen it in an friend's house and it is lovely. Maybe that's the way forward.

I think the coldness would rule them out for me but then I would also avoid LVT in living rooms, for the same reason.

I have a personal preference for wood that looks like wood, and tiles that look like tiles.

A tiled floor is very good for breaking dropped glasses and cups, but itself will break if you drop an iron pan on it.

We have it in our new kitchen diner. Laid on concrete. No ufh.

We have them in the kitchen, hallway and bathroom! Never felt they were cold - they are cool on a hot day, but not noticeably cold in winter.

One positive/negative is that they don't show dirt! I love ours and will have the same in the next house.

Thanks @UnconsideredTrifles, good to know. They are going into a room which will have a large amount of glazing so I am hoping solar gain will help. And I suppose if people feel cold they can always put some slippers on 🤷🏻‍♀️

@PigletJohn I really love a proper wood floor but sadly our budget doesn't go anywhere near far enough for one.

We put them in our previous house in a downstairs bathroom. They looked fab when new, but after about 3 or 4 years, I noticed the wood grain pattern started to fade away in areas of highest traffic, where I'd mopped the most.

They are warm underfoot as they are vinyl rather than tile and stuff doesn't break as easily if you drop crockery etc. in the kitchen. I love the quality- the surface is ingrained with the 'wood' markings, it's incredibly realistic. Just thought I'd mention it as I had similar concerns about tile but wanted something easier to maintain than wood.

@Jennyz123 those look lovely and seem very hard wearing. I will definitely look into them. Do they seem fairly solid once laid? I have a fear of boards being a bit 'hollow', difficult to describe really.

@thenightsky thank you that is very good to know as whatever ends up going on the floor will be in some very high traffic areas. Argh decisions decisions, I thought I would enjoy this part of renovating but actually I'm finding it really difficult!

Ah glad to have given you food for thought! Yes they feel very solid underfoot. I absolutely love them - we're looking to move at the moment and I'll really miss them sad as that is! They were really warm even in winter- I couldn't bear the thought of a freezing tile underfoot in a cosy kitchen. Really easy to clean as well, I just mop and no worry about grout going icky which was my other main concern! My builder loved them as well as they're very easy to fit apparently. You can get free samples on the website which I'd recommend. Good luck, hope you find a solution that works for you!
