Possible private sale- Do I contact sellers again?

We sold our house nearly 5 weeks ago and offered on a house we liked but unfortunately they had accepted an offer that same morning!
So to be proactive the following week I leafletted the area we liked and bumped into some ladies who were at the empty house of their relative who had passed away. We had a really friendly chat and they told me the house was going up for sale soon, had already been valued and took my details.
Now nearly 4 weeks on and I havent heard from them and it's not gone on the market. We really think this house could be perfect for us.
So would it be awful to post a sensitive note through the door asking basically where they are at with the house?
Really want the house but dont know if that's the right thing to do? Thanks
