Would you have an ikea hemnes 6 drawer chest in your living room?

Trying to find some kind of sideboard to fit in an alcove 118 cm wide in my living room/dining room.

Mainly to hold odd bits of paperwork and some toys .

Could I get away with this? Or is it too bedroomy?

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/hemnes-chest-of-6-drawers-white-20374277/

Would probably change the knobs on it .

Any other suggestions- everything else I’ve found seems to be 150cm wide plus And it wouldn’t fit!

Thanks

We have one in our dining room! It's not ideal but we desperately needed somewhere to store DS2's clothes that wasn't in his room, as he just empties everything out. We'd been looking for something suitable for ages then got to a week before lockdown and thought stuff it!

I think it’s too tall for a living room. My DD has this in her bedroom under a tv and it’s a big unit, you don’t notice the decorative stuff on top like you do with a standard height chest or sideboard

The drawers are suitably massive, btw, though you can't get much in the little ones at the top. Half our problem was fining something with draweres big eough to fit more than 2 t-shirts folded very small in.

It’s going underneath 3 built in shelves in the alcove but there should be enough of a gap for picture frames and some kind of plant on top .

I have a through lounge/dining room and this will be in the “dining room” end in this weird little alcove bit I have . A wall sticks out on one side and a chimney breast is on the other . Ideally I could do with a corner storage unit but they don’t seem to exist .

I just want something pretty to hide toys in which isn’t a Kallax unit! (Fed up of those now!)

Will mostly be Lego and craft stuff - and possibly wooden track (but it might be too heavy for this)

I would. I think chest of drawers are great. I wish I had one now!

I think the Hemnes 8 drawer chest looks less bedroomy , particularly if you get it in a colour other than white .

See I love the 8 drawer chest but it’s too big!

157cm - I only have 118 . Even if I put it infront of the chimney breast it would overhang as that is 150cm

Sorry it’s 160cm so I’d have a 5cm overhang each side 😫

I wanted something like a merchants chest with lots of drawers but they all seem to be in massive sizes too .

Can anyone recommend anything?

How about 2 kitchen base units. Two 550s or cheaper would be a 500 and a 600. Choose wooden doors, panels, plinth and top. Top not a worktop but some nice wood.

Or just get a made to measure wooden shelf at the height you want it, put a suitable curtain in front and put plastic drawer units or stacking boxes behind.

My sister has the black/brown colour in her kitchen diner. Doesn't look weird/out of place at all

I've got a similar one from IKEA in my lounge/diner, it fits perfect and I've just got photos and a lamp on it

I just got this one from amazon as a cheaper alternative to the IKEA Hemnes sideboard and I love it. Not available anymore apparently but to find it I think I just searched 'sideboard'. Have a really good read of any reviews though, if you end up with something you don't like it's a pita to send back

I have one in my living room and I love it. Really handy for storage and it doesn’t look out of place at all in my opinion.

I have 2 Ikea brimnes cupboards, for toys, crafts and Lego in my dining room, they look amazing next to one another. Would they fit?

I've been looking for a small sideboard for my hall, Dunelm Mill have quite a few, obviously not sure what your taste/budget is.

I have the B&M Wiltshire sideboard. It’s really nice and surprisingly good quality. Comes fully assembled, not flat pack.

Depending on the look of your room could the Mustard lockers work? Ikea do have metal industrial looking drawers too which I think look cool but would obviously only work with certain decor.

Personally I don’t think I’d have a chest of drawers in the living room. To me it’s a bedroom, hallway at a push thing.

Hmm a few options to look at Thankyou . I think the issue is I need lots of storage for a small space so might need height aswell as depth for drawers.

I’ve only just had the 3 shelves built in above as originally we were going to put a desk under but decided don’t really need one as DCs have desks in their rooms already .

One other option I have found is this - as with the wall on one side it’s a corner space . The only problem is it’s open and I want to hide the bloody toys (sick of the sight of them 🙈) not display them!

Does a corner sideboard exist ? Or maybe if I put two of the dreaded kallax in a L shape and added some pretty feet and drawer inserts / doors maybe

We have one in our bedroom and tbh it feels massive to me and i wouldn't like it outside of the bedroom.

We have this in our dining room - www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/furniture/bevel-natural-solid-oak-large-sideboard/1445.html. solid, lovely and loads of space. It was on offer when we bought it.

We have it in grey in the bedroom and it is really tall. Above shoulder height

Which colour are you after?

The brown and grey hemnes units could be passable in a living room, going off the way IKEA has styled them online. The white ones definitely look like bedroom furniture though.

@Babyiwantabump - yes, that one was on our shortlist but i definitely wanted handles having spent too long trying to open my parents' sideboard! Grin
