Finding an architect

I have found a couple of what I think are suitable architects, in that I like their portfolios and I felt they would be easy to work with and listen to what I want.
They both want fees & 10% of build cost - which would mean the different between me replacing my kitchen or not (I'm doing a side and rear extension).

I'm on quite a budget for the build, I assume as part of the % they will advise me in materials/brands of windows/door etc....but it's quite possible I won't be able to afford their suggestions anyway! Their work is beautiful, but maybe because people have spent a lot more money than I have on their extensions.

How do I find an architect I like, who isn't going to charge a % as well as fees?

I'm getting a bit frustrated...I've asked around, searched RIBA website, looked at the council planning portal, Instagram etc.
I'm interested in design myself, studied it at uni, so I know what I like, but really don't feel confident to design an extension or have the creative ideas to make look amazing (it's a bit of a complicated space) - and I'm also doing it alone, so having confidence in my architects eye/taste is really important to me.

Is there some way of finding a cheaper but stylish/creative architect?

I would suggest going for a smaller firm for starters maybe one who has recently started a business, that way you will be helping them build their portfolio and you will be able to negotiate on the fee's that they require. Broaden your area search geographically aswell. If you are on social media local pages ask for recommendations of Architects that others have used. Where in the UK are you ?

Check the RIBA website - they have a members database that you can search by location, budget, type of job etc

They are small firms/sole traders (not VAT reg).
I've looked at RIBA (see above).
I do t have Facebook, but I've been looking on Instagram...they problem is they are usually not upfront with their fees, and only disclose them after they have been round for a consultation - I have been emphasising I am on a very time budget and I want a lot done for my money!
