Wood Flooring

Hey Everyone,

So I'm looking at getting wood flooring for my kitchen/living room and wondered if anyone had any opinions on whether it's the right decision?

Can people tell what it's like having wood flooring? I'm terrified my dog will slip and slide everywhere.

Just to offer my own experience: I was going to get wood flooring and the fitter advised me that it can scratch and also shrink and contract over the years due to heat and other external things. So, in the end I got laminate which absolutely looks like wood flooring, none of my visitors have been able to tell it's laminate, it doesn't look like laminate used to look. It id harder to scratch it and it doesn't shrink or contract. Plus it came with a 25 year guarantee. maybe this is something to think about in your case?

@balonzz that's great advice. We had considered laminate but liked the look of wood but will definitely relook at laminate.

We have oak flooring in our living room. Our two dogs don’t slip on it (and neither do we), but we went for oiled rather than varnished, so it isn’t shiny. We had ours fitted 4 years ago and it hasn’t warped or shrunk.
I really love it, and with the dogs it is much easier to clean than carpet.

I think my biggest concern was the dog as he's a bouncy, playful thing and is always slipping. I don't want him to get hurt by slipping too much but also need a floor which can withstand the endless play.

We have engineered oak flooring. I have a 9 stone mastiff and she doesn’t slide, but over the 2.5 years it’s been down she has managed to leave several claw marks on it. But then, so have the kids and dropped toys and tv remotes so.....

It’s hard wearing and durable, and a nice look in my opinion. We also oiled so it’s matt with just a slight sheen.

I had wood flooring in my old house and with dogs I wouldn't do it again (specifically haven't in new place). They didn't slip but the floor got awfully scratched - for example they would drop a toy/antler off the sofa and it dented the floor! And that was decent quality (expensive) flooring!

We've just taken up engineered oak - it's been down 13 years and did well (needed sanding but we have extended so it's been fully replaced). It was hard wearing with a lot of traffic.

We've opted for pro tec this time as we are having underfloor heating. It's waterproof, lifetime guarantee and looks and feels like wood. Will let you know what o think when it hors down next week
