Help - cost of fitted wardrobes?

tokirara · 07/09/2019 09:04

We've been quoted £1320 +VAT for a pair of wooden fitted wardrobes (unpainted) in alcoves, containing cupboard, hanging rail, and maybe 2-3 drawers each. Could anyone advise if this falls within typical price range? We have no idea, and been struggling to get quotes from other tradesmen recommended to us due to August holiday season.

Fitted wardrobes are really expensive. Ikea and John Lewis both do a range that look like fitted wardrobes ie they’re floor to ceiling and you buy them in segments, plus you choose what goes inside - drawers/shelves etc.

Meant to add that the John Lewis basics and the Ikea one come in at about half the price of fitted wardrobes and do the same job.

How much are freestanding wardrobes same quality, size and finish? Use that as a starting point.
For fitted you will need to add on bespoke design, build and labour.

I think that's quite cheap though costs vary a lot in different parts of the country and I'm in London. Ikea are good but don't necessarily fit in an alcove and you need to be handy to put them together or pay extra for someone to do that. I imagine John Lewis are the same.

I think thats very cheap too (not London).

Thanks everyone, these views have been really helpful. I think we'll struggle to buy off JL/Ikea and fit ourselves due to various constraints (not to mention the walls aren't particularly straight, it's an old house), so perhaps we are best off going with bespoke fitted ones.

£1320 is very cheap. We paid around £3k a few years ago, but they were painted

I should add the alcoves are about 240(h)x90(w)x50(d) each so not very wide or deep, but not sure that would make a huge difference to the price quoted?

Ikea have a fitting service. Or a tradesman could fit them and adapt to the space - that's only if the sizes are roughly ok I suppose.

We got the JL basics ones for our old flat but it was a straight wall with no alcoves or chimney breasts in the way. It came in about £600 and DP put them together - not suitable for the OP, by the sounds of things, but may be an option for others reading the thread. That £600 got us 4 double wardrobes, inside drawers, inside mirror etc.

Gliderobes. I've not used them but will be later this year and they are the only company that I found with reasonable prices.

V cheap. Best quote we have had (out of four) was £2,200 for similar. Though we are in SE

I've got shapes coming round later. But I'm a bit out of them as the minimum order is £2.400. Also got sliderobes on Thursday. So I'll let you know their quotes.

Ouch! Sharps have quoted me £3100! I almost had a heart attack. Won't be going with them!

Sharps are ridiculous. I swear this whole industry is some kind of cartel; I was being quoted c.£1.2k for each metre of wardrobe...

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2019 14:09

Yes. I spoke to a local company and they laughed when I said Sharps had been to quote!

That's cheap. We paid £1300 and self installed (larger in size)

We paid £4,000 to sharps last year

I was expecting £2500 max. As it's not very big.

Just been quoted £2,600 by sliderobes. No messing around with plastering so less disruption.

Bit late to the party but we had John Lewis quote for fitted wardrobes 4 years ago. Was just over £6000! Ended up with a local company who done them for £2000.

I've gone with a local family business, who quoted £2100 for exactly the same as slidrobes were offering for £2600
