Yay! Thanks for the lovely new thread but shall we start a snagging list? I notice that there’s some replastering that needs doing over there 😜

I am excited to say that, in the spirit of christening the Shinyish New Thread, I have just turned on my new dishwasher for the first time!!! It’s torally lovely but (and yes I know this isn’t a real problem) it’s too quiet 😂😂. Our old dishwasher was so noisy, plus the plinth underneath was broken so it had a tendency to fall out on your foot. This one is amazing. I think I actually took longer stacking it than I would have handwashing the dishes...

@noroof the pics look INCREDIBLE!!!

@worrisome what make is your dishwasher? I love a quiet appliance!

@noroof pics look amazing

All a bit quiet here, last week the builder said "Lewis (joiner) is with you for the forseeable future".

Saturday Lewis didn't come because he hurt his ankle in the mud at Ed Sheeran.

Monday Lewis came, went to get a skirting board, came back about 10 left at 2 (not having fittted said skirting board).

Tuesday Lewis was here all day, he said he'd be working late but I got back from town at 3.30 and he'd gone.

Wednesday Lewis didnt' come. Plumbers came and moved some pipes, left the front door unlocked all day.

Thursday (today) we were told he was coming after going to another job first, got home tonight and nothing has been done.

I have texted the builder (who went to the races yesterday and I suspect has had a duvet day today) and he's promised me two joiner tomorrow.

Equally the sparkie was meant to come today and didnt'!!!!

Tomorrow I have the french doors being fitted (and one refitted), two joiners (hoepfully) and maybe an electrician. But it feels like nothing happens unless I'm here driving it, and I go away for a week tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for the new thread, Wheredoes! Amazing news that your kitchen is in Noroof - you definitely hit the jackpot with your builders!!

Are you still scratching you head about lighting, Soaked? When do you need to decide and/or choose new pendants by?

I mentioned on the last thread, but I'm finding lighting tricky too - we're currently planning not to have pendants over the island due to sight lines and ceiling design. I hope the spots are enough focused light, will need to be careful about shadows when planning the positions.

Since our hob is going to be on the island and we're not planning an extractor over it I also worried about pendants getting mucky, but that's probably just me being a worrier - just want to get it right!

Instead, I'm trying to get lighting over and under cabinets/shelves etc. Think we'll have wall mounted Anglepoises on one wall too, which look good in photos on the internet...!

Has anyone lit a skylight? How does that work?

Report
WorrisomeHeart · 22/08/2019 21:45

I’ve seen photos of lot skylights with some sort of LED tape kind of lights which looks really effective.

Pendant photo - excuse the mess and it’s not the best of pics but I am pleased with them.

@northernruth
It’s a Bosch 6 Serie I think, I will check exact model and let you know.
So frustrating when the trades don’t show - hope you get the full team tomorrow.

Northernruth, sorry to hear about your difficulties, it is a headache isn't it. I feel like I am constantly chasing people so that they are where I need them to be when I need them to be there. Main structure is up and water tight now but builders left it in a bit of a mess (dh is sanding down lumpy plaster at the time of writing this) - there finish was not great, even if they got the job done when they said they would. We then had issues with floor not being level, leaking glass roof, shoddy carpentry, glass being left in the garden, other things being left that should have been taken away. It is a headache really, especially with a toddler in the mix. We have taken it upon ourselves to paint our extension out and in one way I am glad because any bad workmanship is our own but on the other hand it is incredibly hard work. We have so much work to do on the rest of the house too, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and can't wait for the bulk of the job to be finished. The problem is, that these people are not really invested in our projects (some are because they pride themselves in good workmanship/reputation/paid a lot of money for reputation etc.) but sadly, this has not been my experience where they seemed to have been in a huge rush to get on to their next job (especially the builders).

I really like your pendants Worrisome. If only I had height in that section of the room! And I read about those fabled quiet dishwashers that have a little light onto the floor so people know it's on as so quiet.

I think I'm going to try this instead.

Finally got oh to a point where he didn't dislike one. Hmm

Although I like new dad we also had days where I was thinking wtf is going on? Here at 11 and away at 3?!? Or one day not even here at all. When quizzed the next day (because he didn't answer the calls!) I got "it was a really bad day". EH? Tradespeople are so unpredictable! Don't they realise it makes a stressful situation even worse?!

@noroof - your builders are worth weight in gold! Suspect many of us are quite jealous!

Yes, I have had a few days of invisible builders too.
It's such a shame as when they are here, things zip along it seems.
I'm nagging BBB about ordering the floor tiles, he wants to check with tiler about size and if he can get a better price, but I don't want him whining in a few weeks that the tiling can't be done cos tiles aren't here.

They are great... they show up at 8 on the dot... are there all day and leave at 430-5. They have worked some Saturdays as well. Lovely guys.
Oh and the quote given is the price we pay... the only extras are things I've asked for like a new back door.

I think mine means well but is just as unreliable as all the other builders it sounds. Text specially last night to ask if he could start at 7:30 cause they want to get all the concrete done before the weekend. Then doesn't turn up till 8:45 🤦🏽‍♀️

Report
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 23/08/2019 09:19

I've said to mine - knowing that they are dovetailing 2 jobs - that I don't mind if they don't turn up occasionally, but I want a text the previous evening, when he is sorting the next days work, telling me if /when they are coming.
We want to move the cars off the drive to make room for builders vans but I don't want to piss off my very nice neighbours taking up valuable on street parking if no one needs our drive.

So hit and miss. Is there such a thing as a builders min? Because his def don't correspond to mine!!

Not much going on today... Not entirely happy but reminding myself they've been putting in 11hr days this week. Deep breath!

Fingers crossed for everyone to get lots of progress!

Despite them being hit and miss, I'm really impressed with their progress. They seem to work really hard. Theyve finished the concrete and starting on the patio! They think the patio will be done by next Friday!

Shameless place marking.

Am spending this weekend shopping fit DS college stuff and relaxing ahead of the madness.

You lot have got me thinking /panicking about lighting. I've coveted a Tom Dixon light for ages but have give. No thought to over-peninsula lighting.

And as s little treat may I share this brilliant home-building Daily Mash Friday treat ?

@lightlypoached and @WhereDoesThisToiletGo you have given me a smirk this afternoon 😂😂😂

Great news here on the boiler front. Corgi have offered to send Super Auditing Engineer Man to basically do the whole job again but this time route the pipe where we want it, for the same price plus a discount. I have to check with DH but given we were looking at almost twice the price with our extension plumber, and this other guy seems very credible, I think we should go for it.

Report
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 23/08/2019 16:33

@WorrisomeHeart That sounds much more positive re the boiler.

Here we have real progress--protective sheeting up across end of kitchen, Arco props up and load bearing internal wall mostly down. Now have the obligatory sockets dangling from cables mid air and some vertical central heating pipes mocking me by being right in the middle of my proposed open plan.

BBB was on site all day getting his hands dirty which might explain good progress. Site tidied nicely at the end of day so I know who was 'on duty'
Productive long discussion about options (ie how to do things completely differently from Structural Engineers drawings) with possibility of losing central (irritating) supporting pillar in return for accepting 6" piers on walls on edges of room which seems a good trade off.
Just hope SE is OK to redo his plans to builder's spec.

Evening all and thanks for the new thread Where. It's been a month since anything significant happened at our house. So close to the end. No longer living in dust but we're waiting for utility room to be fitted (I think we have all the parts), and en suite toilet to be connected. The shower and sink work though.

Beyond that we need new bedroom furniture and tiles for above the kitchen worktop and for the bathroom sinks (en suite and downstairs). We're getting blinds fitted next week in the new bedrooms and playroom. Holding off ordering furniture until we get the last bill from the plumber.

Oh and we need a fence around the house. There's actually a lot still to do! But no dust.
