Would you live next door to a graveyard?

DH and I have been looking at a house we really like and are considering buying. The only problem is that it's right next door to a graveyard. (And I don't mean a few headstones in a churchyard - I mean a full-on cemetery.)

Personally I don't have an issue with it at all (at least the neighbours will be quiet). Also, it's locked at 18:00 each day, so there shouldn't be yobs hanging around in it. DH, however, is more concerned and a bit unsure about it.

Would you buy a house next door to a graveyard? And do you think such a location would devalue the house?

Personally no and yes I would imagine it would have a slight effect on house value.

Reason I wouldn't is I just wouldn't like the thought of it - plain and simple.

Not sure about de valuing house but I would live there.

Its the living that can hurt you not the dead.

I think it is about personal choice though and many buyers wouldn't consider it if that is what you are concerned about.

When I visited Auschwitz they were building houses outside that would over look it That I could not live with. A graveyard sounds okay to me.

I live at number 13 and think we may have issues with supersticious (sp?) buyers when we come to sell.

I lived near a chuch with a few tombestones before and it wasn't a problem. This is just a different scale though...

Elesbelles, it might be a good way to keep my kids from coming home too late!

I was brought up in a house next to a graveyard -never thought anything of it TBH.

My parents still live in the same house and in fact the street is a "much sought after location" as the estate agents would put it.

my house is over the road from a church yar with graves in it not as big as a cemetry buy still has people newly buried in it

i would love it. Especialyy in a city, a graveyard is valuable green space. We loved a house next door to the cemetery but it was sold before we got a sniff at it. I used to walk the dcs through the cem all the time when they were babies ...i find it very peaceful.

Also, I know a lady who live actually on the grounds of the local crematorium i.e. when the gates close she is inside it! I wonder at her hanging her washing out to dry, though, surely it will have bits of dead people in??!?

We have a house in the UK on a new housing estate and they didn't number a house 13 as the builders believed it wouldn't be worth as much. Goes from 12 to 14! So you might have a point. A graveyard - I think I would buy a house next door, a pub - NO

beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Graveyards can be great, havens for wildlife, it is quiet, you don't have to worry about having a new building site next to your house, lots of plus points. But then some people will find it a bit spooky, if they are so inclined. So I don't think it would necessarily devalue the house.

Ruty, I hadn't thought about the aspect of no new buildings next door - another plus point!

I'm definitely thinking we should go for it! (I can't remember the house number though - I'd better check it's not 13...)

NO.

Not just for the reasons you think.

Graveyards are notorious for attracting drunks and yob teens at night.

Not something I'd want to live next to.

Just because it's locked means nothing. A lot of people see that as part of the appeal.

That being said, a lot of homes here - flats - are build over space once used for burial.

presumably if it devalues the house you are getting it cheaper anyway?
(It does then have a knock on effect as it wouldn't rise as much as other houses might, but we have always taken the view that we are buying a home to live in, not simply an investment. We have twice brought in not the greatest location - a house in an estate of, mostly sold off, prison wardens houses, next to the prison - and a house in a street of mainly, but not all, ex authority houses. Both locations lead to the slight devaluation of the properties, meaning that we could afford a better house than elsewhere.)

Depending on location, it could be really quiet at night.

Or it could be the hangout for all the village teens to go and get pissed.
