Curtains with interior glass doors

Hi,

Does anyone have curtains with interior glass doors? We are having a small extension into the side return and were thinking about glass doors with curtains where our original French doors were. Is that a bad idea?!

Why would it be a bad idea? What is the extension room to be used as? Could replace with double doors is not happy maybe?

The kitchen is being extended across the back of the current French doors, but we are going to keep some form of double glass door internally so that there is enough light in the middle of the house. I wanted curtains so that we can divide the rooms visually sometimes eg at night. It’s just that I’ve not seen this anywhere else, and I wonder if it would look really odd, and someone I mentioned this to was quite adamant it’s not done...

Thanks - the person who said I shouldn’t do it is an interior designer who was meaning to be helpful. Having an extension seems to involve a lot of decisions about things I have absolutely no idea about eg worktops, doors, etc and I just don’t want the house to look awful.

Could blinds be an alternative if your not sure about curtains?

I don’t think it would look good inside the house, personally. If you are going for glass doors to get light, I think the look is just that, an open airy ambience. We have opened out a lot of our house and don’t shut spaces off with curtains. It will look like a changing room or a stage. Don’t do it. I wouldn’t even have the doors! The interior designer is right. Have you ever seen this in a magazine? Probably not.

My aunt has hers like you’ve described. The curtains sit in the wall so when open they’re not really obvious, and then the shut them when they’re in their living room.

I think it is a nice option for the winter if you want a snug area to cosy up in to watch TV. My front door is floor to ceiling glass and we pull a curtain across in the winter - I love the look of it - does n't look like a stage or dressing room. But I would think about how they could sit back out of the way in the day time/ summertime

For glazed doors to the exterior curtains are acceptable. For internal glazed doors it could look quite odd? We have internal glazed doors and get compliments on how spacious it makes the house feel. Don't need curtains. The doors block out a surprising amount of sound too.

How about pocket doors? That way you can have the open when you want the light and closed at night?

We don’t have space for pocket doors, otherwise that would have been a possibility. I would like some division to reduce sound (thanks, Cloudcaptain - I was just hoping it would be quieter, and now I know) and also to stop kitchen smells spreading through the house, as without doors the house will be open from front to back.
