Halogen v LEDs Electrical advice please

I have a ridiculously high number of downlighters in our home and have been slowly changing the halogens for LEDs. However of approx 50 I've replaced so far, there are maybe 7 or 8 that keep flickering on and off. We've put another bulb in each (in case the new LEDs were faulty) but its clearly something to do with the fitting.
Called in an electrician who has told me the following:
The transformers aren't compatible with LEDs. They are only meant for 20-60w halogen lamps. And the fittings in the kitchen and dining area are not fire rated as they should be.
My questions are - if they are not compatible why are 42 of them working perfectly normally?
And if the transformers are not fire rated, do they need to be changed? Is this dangerous? (if so the original electricians didn't put the correct ones in, unless rules have changed of course in last 8 years)
I just want everything up and running and consistent and seem to be going round in circles with no-one seemingly willing to offer a solution.
Can anyone offer me any advice please?

downlighters are an inefficient means of lighting, hence you need so many of them (50!)

holes in ceilings allow heat, smoke and flame to pass through what would normally be a fire barrier

LEDs are taking over the world, and you don't have to get transformers.

I'd say, bite the bullet and get on with a changeover to mains-voltage LED lamps, preferably using a fitting that takes a standard bulb, such as Small Edison Screw (SES) that you can buy in any high street. The multiplicity of funny connections, voltages and lamps often used in "modern" trendy lights in unnecessary.

If you want to use dimmers, you need to buy dimmers and lamps that are compatible with each other. They are less efficient in electricity, but the LEDs will use far less, and will run cooler. They will also last much longer, so you will spend less time and effort changing them.

I suspect that dimmer technology will continue moving on so current controls may become obsolete.

If you are determined to have holes in your ceilings you can use fire-rated lamps at extra cost, or use intumescent smoke hoods (these are easier to fit from above, such as from a loft). As LEDs run so much cooler, it might be that they will not start many fires.

Thanks for that information PigletJohn (not that I understand most of it myself Grin ). You comment about 50 downlighters made me smile...we have 134 of the damned things in the house - I suspect the electrician made more money per hole!
I'd say, bite the bullet and get on with a changeover to mains-voltage LED lamps can you explain how I would go about this? Would these be acle to go in the (134) holes we have in the ceilings? Would I need an electrician to carry this out?

Get the ceilings fixed and install proper lights!

yes you will need an electrician

there are quite a good range of lights in Homebase, but this wholesaler will sell to the public and has a wide range.
www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Menu_Index/index.html
they deliver (there may be a charge for small orders, I don't know) and have a printed catalogue you may find easier to browse. They include one with deliveries but I expect will post you one if you ask. Prices shown may exclude VAT.

Other posters may know other good sources.
