I'm planning on being finished with our extension by Christmas. Hopefully fully furnished and decorated by then; we start the work in July

Ps. Congratulations on the planning permission! What's the project?

Side return extension, middle floor, and loft! I'm hoping for Christmas but need to be realistic - haven't even lined up a builder yet, and it's in London....

You must be excited - nice to have a lovely deadline!

Oh wow, a big job! Good luck with the builders; definitely the hardest decision! We're finally sorted with a builder (sent out requests in November) now just waiting on him to finish his current job so that we have a definite start date.... so some point in July!

Good luck, we started in January and want to be in by summer, but I'm already excited by Christmas

Hi to you all!

So dare I ask, what's the usual lead time for finding a builder, getting quotes, and getting started?!

Dont know what is usual time, but it took couple of months for us. There was Christmas in between which also delayed it. Hopefully it won't be that long for you.

Following as we (I think unrealistically) would also like to have finished our enormous project by christmas... Unfortunately we're still at the drawings stage without a sniff of planning permission! We're looking at doing a single storey side extension (but on a sloping site which is a headache), moving internal walls and bathroom on 1st floor and a loft conversion, so sounds quite similar to yours Mama. Quite why we didn't just BUY the house we're trying to create I don't know Hmm

Ages! Lots of decent builders will have 6+months lead time.

My chosen builder got the quote to me 5th Jan. He's not free to start until July. A good builder should be busy as a lot of people are having work done instead of moving.

Good to know that I wasn't the only one who had been following up with architect and builders for so long now!
We are doing side and back extension of our bungalow and loft conversion/first floor extension.

How is it going for you all? We made a few changes to plan and waiting for new quotes. No idea of start date!

Hi All. Just waiting for quotes from two builders. Got our plans approved in November (garage conversion and new bedroom above it) However- we just know the neighbours are going to be as awkward as possible when we need to put scaffolding up! Sometimes wish we'd just looked for a bigger house.

If we're not in by Christmas I'll shoot myself. Supposed to be moving in by August 1st, but I doubt everything will be completely done. Christmas is my goal to have the smaller bits finished as my parents are coming to stay with us in the new house, so I want to have it looking ship shape by then!

From planning permission to moving in was two years for us - most of that was lead time for the builder.
