Are toilet roll holders a necessary evil or unbelievably naff?

Looking at refitting our bathrooms and I say we don't need toilet roll holders as toilet roll can go on the windowsill and DH says you HAVE to have a toilet roll holder.

Can the collective wisdom of mumsnet give us a definitive answer Smile

We never got round to fixing ours on after bathroom was done: I would prefer to have it back, loose rolls around reminds me too much of student days!

I second your Dh. You have to have a toilet roll holder!!!

We moved into our house over 2 years ago and still havent put ours up, it drives me mad seeing them loose lol. My mum has a freestanding one thats quite nice, and you can store loose ones in the bottom too

Toilet roll holder required, definitely.

Definitely necessary.

We have a lovely metal stand that stacks a few then has one on top for use. Much better than one on the wall!

Definitely necessary! I don't have a windowsill in my bathroom!

Guess who's chuffed to bits that he's won the debate lol.

Second problem is which side of the toilet should it go? He's left-handed, I'm not. Maybe we should have a holder on the left hand side and another better quality quilted roll on the windowsill.

Ooh no, you definitely need the toilet roll right at hand. I have spare rolls on top of the shelf above the toilet cistern and if I run out mid wipe, what a pain having to reach over.[santa] this looks like two loo rolls with a Santa hat on.

We don’t have any, and the kids are forever chucking the loose rolls down the loo accidentally. We have ledges behind the loos.

I'm with you. I think they're an unnecessary faff and often in the wrong place, necessitating uncomfortable twisting round to reach them.

Report
daisychicken · 12/12/2017 20:41

Does it not depend on where the walls are next to the loo? We only have one wall to the left so that's where our toilet roll holder is.

I never knew that there were some people who objected to toilet roll holders!
They are by far the best solution for where to put the toilet roll.

I think they are very useful and should be placed within easy reach when you're on the loo. The side is more dictated by where the wall is. If it's the downstairs loo with both walls close by, then place it wherever it's less likely to get in the way or get splashed when you're washing your hands.

Ours are both on the left even though everyone in the house is right-handed.

Pro tip: plan to put up you loo roll holder. Open a bottle (of tasteful, well priced wine) so you can have a glass while you put it up. Get distracted. Have a few more glasses until the bottle is empty. Wash out the bottle. Plonk it on the floor near the loo and place the roll on the neck. Voila! Suitable bohemian/showcase of you good taste in wine to impress your 'We think we are cool' snob friends and requires zero effort.

Agree with most - you need a toilet roll holder, unless it is a shared student house.
Surely it depends on where the wall is, as to which side it goes ?
We have one on different sides in different toilets, it really never has been a problem for any of us (Im left handed and others are all right handed).

Thanks all - I knew mumsnet would come up with the goods Grin.

I will have to change my ways - I like the idea of a stand but know that the kids will be constantly moving it to without arm's reach, so I think a wall mounted holder is the answer - now have to train all and sundry to replace the empty roll

We have a free standing one, much better than attaching to the wall, as they always go wonky, you can also store loo rolls on them, although upstairs I use a wedgewood chamber pot and downstairs an antique basket. (Posho)

If you get a free standing one you can both have it where ever you like.

I do that Grin

I do have a free standing holder as well though. I don’t like picking the roll up, putting fingers down the middle to hold it where other unwashed hands after wiping arse have been before me.

Even though I’m washing my hands, I know!
