Engineered Wood Flooring

We're in an Edwardian semi, decorating the whole house, slowly. I've always intended to sand the boards in all rooms as I go but builder mentioned engineered wood flooring to us.

I love the look of original boards and deeply dislike the look and feel of laminate. Where does engineered wood sit on that scale?

We've had a lot of work done in one of the bedrooms which has resulted in a lot of damaged boards (pipes/electric access). I wondered if it's just easier/quicker/cheaper to lay engineered wood in there?

Do you have engineered floors? Do you like them to walk on?
