Does a first time buyer with big deposit in secure long term job - need a broker?

Or should they just approach a few high street banks? Should you pay a fee to a broker? Just seen this one Which? do an independent service for £499...any thoughts?

Don’t know if you ‘need’ a broker but a whole-of-market broker should be able to get you a better deal than you unless you put in a lot of leg work.
