Small double bed with traditional look

Bachingupthewrongtree · 13/10/2017 10:42

We have just moved house and need to buy a small double bed for the guest room. We would like something comfortable but also traditional looking, as the house is very old (Georgian) and we would like something that will fit in.

Please can I have any recommendations. Budget up to about £500.

Thanks!

I think you could just go with a divan bed + get someone to make up a wall mounted headboard. That could look pretty traditional.

Or pick one up from me. I’ve got a couple of small double headboards that I decided not to use and will give away for free if someone picks them up from S London ;)

Thank you for the kind suggestions/offers. I was wondering whether a wood or brass frame might look better?

A matter of taste really. I think if you try brass beds/wooden beds in google shopping, you'll get lots of results.

The Ikea Hemnes is only £175 for a double but does come in smaller sizes; is solid wood, looks lovely and traditional but not old fashioned and comes in white, white stain and dark wood.

Try Taurus Beds - they do wooden beds in a variety of styles and finishes.

If it's a small double please choose a style with a low end/no footboard. DH is tall, short closed end beds are his nemesis.

this sort of thing is sympathetic to various styles of decoration.

I think a proper Bedknobs & Broomsticks style bed would look good.

Brass looks very dated in my view. I have bits of one in the garage. Perhaps I could sell it.

Look for ideas from Neptune, but possibly too expensive for you. Anything in white will look tidy and M and S do a basic range which is pretty good - Hastings from memory. Also Loaf have decent bed frames. They have excellent headboards.

Personally I hate small doubles when we stay with anyone. Can you not stretch to king size? Much nicer for your guests.

Thanks so much everybody and i will check out these options. Sadly the room is too small for a king size.

Unless we went for a sofa bed, but aren't they uncomfortable?

Unless you need a sofa I wouldn't go for a sofa bed.

I would also go for a divan or a cheap bedframe and then get a headboard to go with it.

We used to have a Georgian house and I had ideas about getting something brass to go in it. However, the options seemed to pretty much be spending a small fortune, getting something original that looked like it came out of a skip or that tacky shiny brass beloved of the high street bed shop. I ended up taking the headboard off dh's 10 year old Habitat bed, painting it white, buying a padded and shaped headboard and covering it in linen fabric. We spent the money on a mattress and toppers.

Personally I like a double sized bed but we're not big people. I don't like footboards for the reasons described up thread.

You're very welcome :)

This is where I bought the headboard to cover: www.thedormyhouse.com/bedroom/headboards-calico-covered

It's really easy to cover using a staple gun.

If I was doing it now, I would get one of those beds that lift up with the storage inside. Actually I probably will do that for our new bedroom!

There are quite a few options on eBay for Victorian 4ft beds, try that if you want an original look. You can buy sprung bases/mattresses separately.

4 ft 6 ins is a double. 4 ft is random. I'm surprised 6 ins makes so much difference in a room. 4 ft 6 or 5 ft?

Thanks blue and Bubbles. I have actually been looking on ebay and there are some good options. I will have a rethink about the size of the bed.

Maybe it is better just to have a large bed even if there isn't much else in the room, on the basis that it will be more comfortable. DH wants to have a sofa bed, but I am not convinced.

My oh and I are neither large nor tall, but sleeping in a small(presumably you mean 4 foot) double was always very uncomfortable. Let's face it, would you like to sleep on a 2 foot bed, which is all the space you've got? Elbows and knees collide a lot. OP, go for the biggest bed you can fit in the space.
