Urgent help please - DH has just fallen through the loft!!

Clearing out the loft for move and dh slipped and has put foot through loft creating a massive hole!
Just recovering from the shock of seeing his leg hanging through the ceiling followed by silence (he is ok thankfully) and now we need to try and patch it up. Not the best time to find a tradesman to help on a Saturday evening.

There's bits of loft insulation floating about & I'm panicking about asbestos being in it.

Trying to keep dd downstairs.

Has this happened to anyone and what did you do?
I'm a bit shaken up to be honest.🙁

Will home insurance not cover it?

Panicked and got in touch with ex fil w/o put a new board up for me after I pulled my dd out of the hole and picked up the broken tiles that cartwheeled down the stairs

Don't think you need to panic. Just contact someone on Tuesday if your DH not DIY savvy to patch it up. My Dad and DH have both done it in their time!

Ok what about asbestos, would that be in the dust/insulation?

How old is the house? Shouldn't be any asbestos in it! Just call someone out on Monday - your insurance should cover it.

Glad your h is ok.

I doubt your loft is insulated with loose asbestos. And if it is, you would be in as much danger as a kid. Clear up with gloves and a face mask as rockwool or fibreglass doesn't half itch.

Ring your house insurers if you have accidental damage cover. Bank holiday weekend , sods law - but it is not an emergency.

My DH did this. Called insurers and got trades in. Hole was unpatched for about 2 weeks but not a problem. Very unlikely to be asbestos in a modern home, how old is it? We had lots of pink insulation floating down for a while. Then I paid someone £100 to fully board it out, stick a light switch up there and they put shelves in to the eves for me as well. Bargain!

Sorry for panicking, it was just such a loud bang and I was standing right underneath. The smoke alarm came flying off and just missed me! Dh's leg was hanging there and he went quiet so I panicked.

agree with pp. if you have insurance call them. or get to a diy store (should be open another hour or so) to get a board and tools to patch up.

I think it was built 1969

Probably not likely to have asbestos in, but if the dust is annoying, tape some plastic over it - a black binbag will do. Not pretty, but you'll not be constantly picking fluff out of your hair.

The insulation is most likely something like rock wool. www.rockwool.co.uk/

Think they only used asbestos in walls like concrete, not in loft insulations.

A neighbour has just come round and said it is rockwool.

Probably wouldn't bother with insurance either would ring someone to have a look first - dh did this a few years ago and just needed a patch up with board and plaster we then painted it ourselves. Cost about £70 and it was £100 claim on insurance

Send him back up to do it again - then video it - at least you will make some money on it!

Hahahahahahahahahahaha... my ex-husband did that!

Insurance paid for new ceiling and complete redecoration of the room. After they'd pissed themselves laughing.

Sorry. I shouldn't laugh. But I keep thinking about my ex doing it...

😂

From your title I thought you were going to say you were all laughing at him.
My dh did something similar but down a cellar, there wasn't any steps.
He wasn't hurt and we were pissing ourselves laughing as was so funny.

I'm so glad your dh was ok.
It won't be asbestos, but the fibres are itchy and very fine, so not good to breathe in if it can be avoided.
