Water softening shower head

Hi everyone,

I live in a hard water area and hate it. Mainly because it's awful on my skin and hair. Eventually I'd like to install a proper water softener machine in my house but I'll only do it once I re-do my kitchen. So the alternative is to get one of those shower heads with a water softener in it.

My question is if they are any good or if it's a massive gimmick? Any recs for one that works and doesn't cost a small fortune?

We had one and DH said it worked well (none of the rest of us bothered by hard water) but it got full of limescale and needed replacing quickly. A false economy I think.
