Interested in how you organise books, Where do you keep your books?

Interested in what others do?
We have lots of books general reading, fiction, non fiction and reference for 4 in a four bed house no study but large lounge , having a spring clean and need to get some order ( and make room )
where do you keep your books and how how do you organise them?

Cabinet in dining room and boxes in cupboards. I am working my way through them and getting rid of some of them as we have too many.

Our books are a real mess but not sure whether to have a joint book collecton or have his and her separates book areas/rooms and kids in their room?

We had a wall of bookshelves built across one wall of the lounge, up and over a door too. Looks awesome. The bottom shelf is deeper so the big heavy books are there. They are colour coded!

We have joint adult books divided onto fiction, poetry, graphic novels, non-fiction general, travel and reference. They are all in the living /dining room on shelves wherever we could fit any (including all round the bottom of the ceiling). Cookbooks are in the kitchen, children's books are in the kids bedrooms and all over the floor everywhere.

If we lived somewhere bigger I might put shelves in the hall too.

Books do furnish a room...

Children's books are on IKEA picture rails and in IKEA trones (wall mounted) so they are tidy.

We have 5 bookcases in our (quite large) living area, the children have one each in their bedrooms. I cleared out all the one read only fiction 4 years ago so we now have non-fiction/classics mostly which is sort of organised between bookcases.

Grubby I had books in boxes for 4 years waiting for my wall of shelves! Worth it!

We have a room just for books with some comfy chairs. A sort of snug.

Books got work, study books are in the family study.

I flirt with the idea of colour organisation but worry about not finding a book.

We have adult fiction organised by author. A teen section by author and the younger children have their own areas. Non fiction organised by genre.

We built a wall bookshelf/case too also with the bigger bottom shelf. We each get half. There are a few random books elsewhere but I'm going to keep us to this wall. Agree with pp, they make a nice atmosphere and remind me of my youth as most of mine were read from age 16 to 34.

Our children's books are all upstairs- in bookcases in their rooms, and on the corridor. They are kind of grouped by subject or by author (though they get disturbed quite a lot as my children read a lot).
Our books are in the sitting room, on lots of bookcases. Grouped by subject, then by author (but not slavishly). I keep sci-fi fantasy, graphic novels in groups together. Literary fiction together, etc etc. We have a "top shelf" of stuff really unsuitable for children, but i don't think they've noticed yet helped by the fact that our bookcases have obscured glazing.
Books that were ours as children have all gone upstairs so the children can enjoy them
It's so special when they love a book that we adored as a child.
But heartbreaking when they don't like something that was precious to us!

Bookshelves in living room with a range of adult fiction / non-fiction and children's books.

Bookshelves above cupboard in sitting room alcove, for large reference books; gardening, art, travel and older 'antique' books.
Bookcases upstairs in bedrooms for fiction etc. Technical books on bookcases in the office.
In the past I have lined the hall with low bookcases, also have painted cheap pine bookcases the same colour as the wall to 'disappear' them.

We halesowen bookcases but we massively decluttered books to make space. We passed on most fiction books as I rarely reread a book, I'm usually devouring more books! We've just passed on 5 carrier bags of kids books as they chose the ones they really like and reread to keep. I'm slowly culling my uni/teaching subject books as I'm unlikely to need them again

Rest on a wall of bookshelves in our conservatory/sun room. It's not ideal as the ones on the top shelf have faded a bit but it's such a large room with a massive long wall it can take the shelves without being overwhelmed.

Most of our books are in floor to ceiling Billy bookcases in the study, but then I also have a "posh" bookcase in the living room which holds mostly coffee table books and some naice leather bound editions.
Then I have a bookshelf in the bedroom to keep bedtime reading to hand a mix of chick lit and some classics.
Sounds a bit complex but I mostly know where things are - honest!

Everywhere. The living room, which is big, and the hall, stairs and landing are lined with built-in white-painted bookshelves, my and DH's studies have work books all round the walls, and the bedrooms all have at least one large bookcase.

In previous houses we had lots of bookshelves in the lounge, our current house has a spare bedroom so the shelves are now in there. We're aiming for a kind of study/library/guest room hybrid. But I'm now expecting another child so that room won't be spare at some point. Not sure what we'll do then.

Oh, we have most of kids books in DD's bedroom, just a small Billy in the front room for overspill. Adult books are mixed mine and DH's (with quite a few duplicates, we discovered when we first moved in together ), then ordered by genre, and by author name within genre.
