Bidet versus water spray thing?

I'm doing up the bathroom and really want a bidet - or the effect of a bidet. Downsides: 1) really not keen on the extra piece of furniture in the bathroom, 2) don't like the notion of the walk from the toilet to the bidet. The integrated bidet/toilet combinations look awful (unless there's some secret place that makes nice and hygienic looking ones?). Alternatively, I'm wondering about the hand held spray thing. Firstly, can anyone tell me what this is called? I came across them a lot while travelling and think it's a great idea. I'm guessing plumbers will know about this and be able to install it? Do any of you have experiences of these things?

Are you in England? If you want to sell your house in the not too distant future I wouldn't put either in. If you're staying and really want one, then I'd go for the shower head/toilet combo. I've never seen one in the uk.

I'm in England and not worried about selling, more content to make myself more comfortable. What's your experience of the shower head idea?

They're called douches. We noticed some in the Clearwater catalogue

I don't know how you'd not spray it all over the place but presume there must be a technique

the hand-held spray things do not conform to UK water regulations, due to the possibility of water contamination with bum fluids.

It would be possible to design one that was acceptable, but I am not aware of one.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. It's interesting it's such a rare idea here. When I was a kid I had an Iranian friend and her family kept plactic plant watering buckets in the bathroom. It's not like no one here would want one. Hint, regarding random spray, that's one of many reasons why I wouldn't want the combi toilet. They shot jets of water up in the air if no one's sitting on the loo, and I know guests will play with it!

I live in the ME and bum douches are a standard fitting. I'm not fussed but dh uses so much less loo paper and they're great for cleaning the loo....

Duravit do a toilet which has an inbuilt spray.

I think it is designed for disabled use but looks like a standard toilet (with benefits).

Very similar to one I used in a luxury hotel in Turkey.

If I was re-doing the bathroom I would definitely fit one.

I've got a douche similar to Haint's link. It is brilliant. It was straightforward to route the plumbing from the sink on the same wall. But as regards the inevitable spray from between porcelain and loo seat I also happened to have a drain in my tiled floor which is not such a common feature here in UK either.

I've always known then as hand held bidets, and every Muslim household I've been in in the UK has one. Maybe Google bathroom supplies in Leicester or Bradford and see what they offer.

You need a Japanese toilet!! Has the whole lot integrated and will even give your down below a blow dry. My brother was raving about them when he came back from a holiday in Japan, he's very germ conscious and thought they were amazing. Cost a bomb but you could just move the TV into the loo, you can get them where the seat is heated Wink. He was looking them up, there's a company in Hertfordshire that do them, honestly they practically make the tea.

It is best to put the bidet next to the toilet. A bidet is great for getting really clean, salt water bathing if needed, washing feet, hand washing smalls.

I have lived in several homes with a bidet, strange that people don't want them any more, I have been wondering if hygiene has become more lax or if people are using wipes instead of washing.

If we had a decent sized bathroom I would be putting one in, I really miss it. I don't fancy a spray thingy.

This is the type of toilet i was thinking of: superbath.co.uk/3496/geberit-aquaclean-sela-wall-mounted-wc-japanese-146140111

They have moved on since I last saw them it has a remote control!

A bidet takes up too much space and most people in the UK don't use or want them.

The shower douches are much more practical because you can use them to clean the loo as well as your bottom and they don't take up any space. The only problem is that in the UK our water tends to be too cold to shoot at your bottom so unless you are going to have it with a mixer tap and hot water attached Confused )not even sure if that is possible but it sounds a bit unwieldy) then you probably won't use it anyway. Cold water straight from the mains up your jacksy in January is no fun.

Before moving to my current house id never used a bidet. But now that i have one, dont think i could ever be without one again! This is maybe tmi but they are great for after sex washing. That is the only use i have for it though but I love it for that.

I just remove the shower head from its holder and direct the spray to where it is required. Don't most people do this?

What about a bio bidet? They are very popular in Japan I think and have auto wash/drying etc but are cheaper than a full built in toilet with wash/dry and can be removed if you wanted to sell your home as some people would put off I think!

I'm leaning towards the hand held douche. The Japanese toilet has the jet that shoots out of the toilet -so if no one's on it your floor gets wet. The drain pp mentioned is the answer to that I guess. But also I don't like the idea of the hot air down there so some of the tech would be unused. Also with the hand held douche there's no tech to go wrong. I like things to be simple. It's hard to get excited over a piece of hygiene equipment but after years of travelling to places that value this I'm finally in a position to set my own bathroom up to provide this! I may have a little cupboard built to house it.

We have two bathrooms and have bidets in both next to the loos. I wouldn't be without them! I think it might have something to do with having lived in Italy where every bathroom has one. But I love that clean feeling!

I'd started out thinking I would get actual bidets booface, but worried about the space the extra furniture takes. My bathrooms are decent size but I'm worried it would look crammed. Maybe I should Google for pics.

Bidets are useful for lots more than just bum washing! Plant soaking, handwashing tights, feet and wellies, to name just a few! I wouldn't liike to be too long without one (non UK).

In our 1906 renovation project the bathroom (bath, handbasin and bidet) and the WC+handbasin are on opposite sides of the property so if you want to use the bidet you have to poddle along the corridor. Confused

The bathroom refit will have to wait so I've solved the problem by putting in a "hairwashing accessory" (is that a euphemism, I wonder?) to divert the water to a spraygun on a long shower attachment which can reach to the toilet and has a hook on the wall between.
At only €9 from Lidl it's better than nothing and an easy, non invasive DIY job. I'll find a picture.
