Mantelpiece

Last year we moved house and we have a fireplace in our living room. At the time I started a thread about where to get a mantelpiece/fire surround and got some very helpful replies.

However, we're now having the living room decorated and I've been able to see the fireplace for the first time in a while. The opening is tiny and low and the chimney breast isn't very wide. None of the 'standard' fireplace sizes fit so no going to B&Q or anywhere similar to get one from there.

I have found a company who do mantel shelves with corbels which might be an option, but otherwise I'm a bit stumped. There's also no hearth and we can't change the actual internal workings of the fireplace - I don't want to light a fire (it's a capped gas fire) but just had a mantelpiece as a feature and to put bits and bobs on if necessary.

Measurements are:
Chimney breast width- 42.5in/108cm

Fireplace opening- 25.5in/65cm wide & 22 1/4in /56.5cm high

Pictures attached, any ideas would be really appreciated.

Could you go to a local joinery workshop and get someone to measure up and build you a bespoke one?

depending on the age of the house there is most likley a hearth built into the floor underneath the carpet.

For a mantle you can quite cheaply buy these which would look nice in your setting;

How about tiling around it to increase the proportions and then putting a wooden surround on?

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure we can afford a carpenter to make something at this point in time, but I can definitly look into it.

It was actually Oak Store Direct that I was looking at for the mantel shelves, so something more like this

I did really want our tiler to put some tiles around it, as I really like how that looks. Would tiles work with the mantel shelf, if the tiles had an edge trim on it?

How wide is the chimneybreast OP?

Would this fit by any chance (1100mm/43 inches wide)

Or these are even smaller at 930mm/39 inches wide

Thanks! Chimney breast is 42.5in wide, so really quite small, but the 39in ones might just work. I will investigate more.
