Cost of a decorator!?...

Help please! Just had a decorator come in to quote doing our box room which is going to be used as a nursery for DD in May.

£360 to wallpaper, paint the three plain walls, paint the ceiling, skirting boards and door. Obviously we need to buy paint, paper, lining paper and wallpaper paste on top...

We've never used a decorator but DH is hopeless at DIY so needs must, is £360 a bit steep?

How large is the room? To be honest, for woodwork, ceilings and lining paper that sounds reasonable. Assuming the P&D have insurances and are coming recommended.

4x2 max the room size. Yes, it's the same people DHs parents have used for years.

We've never used a P&D before so have no idea on prices!

I pay £120 per day. He'd get that done in a day for sure. However I'm aware he's both 'cheap' and a decent decorator- gold dust!

Someone else quoted 5k to paint my house- white. Standard 3 bed. I was aghast!

This guys good, problem is he's old so it could take 1-3 days... the £360 will be regardless of how long it takes

A lot of decorators prefer to supply paint and get it 'trade'

I'm in the NW and my guy charges £80 a day. He'd do that in a day and a half tops.

He wallpapered two walls, painted three feature walls, lined and papered a chimney breast, painted the hallway up and down (26ft) above and below the dado rail, and painted all the woodwork in the hallways and the doors, and did a few odd jobs putting things up, all in a week.

sounds reasonable to me, unless you are in a very cheap part of the world. must be at least 2 days work? one to prep surfaces and do undercoats, then another day to finish. £150-180 per day not excessive. I think we were paying £150 a few years ago and thought that was pretty good, but we are in fairly price part of SE.

I'm in the NE and have just had two large rooms painted inc glossing. Took him three days and cost £200. It's immaculate.

Sounds very normal to me. A fairly standard sized room is generally £450 to £500 plus materials if it includes ceilings and woodwork.
