Hitchin/Royston

We are thinking if moving from East London. Most of our family and friends are abroad or local to East London with one in Bromley. Initially had our heart set on Hayes in Bromley but now also considering Hitchin, Royston or any other area which would suit us.

We have 2 children aged 5 and 9 so ideally want to move asap for 9 year old to settle before second day school. I am chinese while my partner is English and we are looking for somewhere where we will be able to fit in at ease and an area that is very friendly with a good community spirit.

Somewhere close to good schools and more green and perhaps not too far from shopping, restaurants etc if we did want to go out further.

We would like somewhere with lots of children activities going on at least not too far away. Swimming, children clubs, and lots of other families around so kids can make friends.

Can anyone give me information about hitchin/Royston if it fits most of our requirements please?

Hitchin without a doubt. Lived here for years.
There are 3 secondary schools- single sex boys / girls which are both good and a mixed school Priory. Primary schools vary a lot so you'd be best to shop around. Outlying villages are slightly cheaper and some have good schools. The town has a swimming pool, cafe culture and lots of countryside nearby for walking etc.

However, prices have really rocketed in the last year. The 'London' effect means more people live here and commute.

Not sure of your budget but you will need at least £450K and more like £500K to get a 3-bed family house. Houses within walking distance of the station or the Girls School are higher price.

Lived in Royston for many years until very recently.

Pm me and I can do the hard sell on the place ;)

I will give you a two sided viewpoint as grew up there and returned as an adult with my own family. My point of view changed!

I highly ecommend it. Hutchins is nice too but far more Expensive.
Good primary schools and middle schools. High school is not bad, had a dip in goodness. There are very good high schools nearby that many kids go to too.

Royston has easy access to Cambridge.
If you can afford Hitchin, go for it as prices are going up like crazy.
We live in a village 3 miles from Hitchin and would struggle to buy the equivalent home there now. It's become prime commuter belt and houses have rocketed.

Good schools include William Ransom, Samuel Lucas, Mary Exton (used to be) and Ickleford (1 mile away.) You could also look at villages like Offley and Pirton.
