Planning an extension - newbie

GrendelsAunty · 22/12/2016 17:59

I've just had an offer accepted on a Victorian villa which I hope to extend. I've never done this before Confused
Is there a website where I can find out basic info, like how big an extension I'm likely to be allowed, or other things I should really have considered before now Blush

Sally Tagg website has lots of info and so also does the government website called the planning portal ( think that is the name).

Look at planning applications from other nearby houses and see what was rejected/why and what was accepted.

Maybe call your local planning authority, some offer pre application services where you can talk to a planner and get a feel regarding what will be allowed. Some authorities charge for this service others offer free advice.

A good Architect or technician will be invaluable too !

Look on Pinterest & Houzz for inspirational pics... there's a dilemma section on Houzz too if you have questions to put out there !

And of course adding a thread here will get loads of fab advice too ! Smile

It's a big step - but oh so worth it when you really plan well in advance and get it just right !

Dependent on what your planning it's of note that up to 30th May 2019 you can build double the size out from the rear under permitted development.

I've just had a 5 metre extension done whereas usually I would only have been able up to build 3 metres without having to apply for planning permission.

Have a look on google maps satelite view to see if any of the neighbours have extended then go to the Council website and view their plans for inspiration.
