A shrub or something for a pair of planters north west aspect

Any ideas on something that looks good all year? I've been planting seasonally but failed really, I'm no gardener. I'd like something tall and statement but understated and not showy like topiary, no offence, I just don't like that look but don't know what I do like!

Fancy bamboo looks stately in planters and needs little maintenance. You can get slow growing varieties, with interesting leaves and stems. They sound lovely in the wind. Are you thinking about either side of a door?

Bay trees or holly would also look good and only require light pruning.

Red robin can look good in tall
Planters. Very low maintenance.

Pyracantha, almost maintenance free, evergreen, beautiful berries.

Thanks for these suggestions. I wouldn't have thought of any of them!

The trouble with tall things is that you need a really big pot if it's not to dry out in the summer!

This is quite a good list of mid-height things that work well in pots:
