How Much?.... Carpets

Just had an measure up for a new carpet in bedroom. Area to be carpeted is 28metres square and carpet is £20 per metre square. The company (bog standard high street) has quoted £1500 for carpet, underlay and fitting this already includes a 20% discount. It's been a while since we had a new carpet but the quote seems expensive or is this really what they charge nowadays?

do you have any local suppliers? They often undercut the big boys.

I just had 100% wool Berber on my stairs, landing and good sized bedroom inc underlay and fitting for £670, could you find a cheaper carpet? I sourced mine from eBay.

Was it somewhere that scs? They can be v pricey.
Get yourself to a local supplier like PP said, also agree that £20 square metre is a lot!

Agree with special subject. The ideal is to find a localish firm who do contract carpeting for developers as well as residential. They will have large volumes on some standard carpets, which enables them to employ good experienced fitters (and a lot is about how well a carpet is laid) and good discounts on standard ranges.

Dont let a scruffy shop put you off. In the past I have got recommendations from Managing Agents (who regularly use carpet firms to lay communal carpets) and from other trades who often find themselves working alongside carpet fitters and can recognise who knows their stuff.

I had a carpet fitted not long ago 20 x 15 foot room, long hallway and stairs and it came to £1200 with underlay and fitting. That was with Carpet Right.

But there is actually something wrong with that quote though isn't there? The maths don't stack up.

28 square metres of £20/m carpet is £560 a metre.
Underlay is less than £10/m so max of £280
You're up to £840.

So where is the other £660 coming from? It can't be fitting, is it gripper rods / door plates etc? You need to ask for a breakdown.

I don't think £20 per square metre for carpet is that expensive (depending on what you're having) but you need to find out how the quote has been calculated.

I'm having stairs/ landing, three bedrooms - good size, two doubles and one quite mega double and a living room - it's £2800 ish for everything.

In an Edwardian terrace if that gives you an idea of room size.

Does that sound ok everyone?! I'm literally clueless but I would say £1500 for one room sounds quite steep.

What price is the carpet /sqm?
Price of underlay /sqm?
fitting - total or per sqm?
Do you need grippers?
Do you need door plates?

I don't think 10/sqm is a lot. Mid range I would say.

wow, 5.3 x 5.3 m is a big room.
I got very posh carpet, all new underlays, 4 beds+stairs+landing+most of downstairs done for £3.2k.

We paid £20sqm for decent carpet with a local firm last year. And £25sqm for the living room.

The issue is that your room is massive.
