Toilet seat despair.

Not the most exciting thread but can anybody find me a toilet seat? We moved house three weeks ago and I've so far bought five but nine will fit. The house we moved to hadn't been cleaned for years and the existing seat is vile but I can't find a replacement.mhave added the pic to give you an idea of the fittings.

I've had problems finding one to fit mine. Does yours have too fixings, i.e. you can't access the fittings from underneath?

Top, not too

Ohhh, don't start me on the subject of toilet seats! Why, oh why, are they not a standard size. I feel your pain but cannot offer a solution. Cannot tell from your photo whether it it a top only fitting or can you access the screws from below?

Is there anywhere on the toilet that tells you what make it is?

^^this!!
Is it a soft close? If so it might be cheaper/easier to buy a cheap loo and seat and go without a soft close

I've just paid £65 for a soft close seat to go with my new loo - the cheapy loo downstairs was £40/50 complete!

Sometimes you need to get the matching toilet seat from the loo maker - ie ideal standard studio range did some odd size loo seats - so see if you can see a maker stamp in the cistern ( auto correct changed that to custard! Lol ) if you can take a picture of the whole loo from a few different angles - a good bathroom supplier should be able to help !

In what way do ordinary ones not fit?

(BTW, if you ever buy a new WC, avoid the "quirky" or "stylish" ones in novel or smart designs, for this very reason)

Looks like one I had but have replaced
Look for Bemis branded ones in Homebase etc; measure seat and get same size. The fixings are different but still work

If none of the standard sizes fit then only probable option is to try and find out the manufacturer and contact them. Which you'll find will be quite expensive. Ideal standard for example charge about £80 for their toilet seats !
You'll probably find it cheaper to fit a whole new toilet. You'll be able to pick up a decent one if you buy ex-display or end of line.

It's an Armitage Shanks toilet.

The fittings can be got from the bottom but all the loo seats I have bought the fittings at the back don't go back far enough so the toilet seat won't fit. It also has a sunken bit for the fittings which means there are raised bits to either sides of the fittings.

I'd love a new loo but the suite is a cream colour and I do want to replace it all at some point. I don't think I can live with a white lol and cream sink and bath and can't afford to replace it all.

Why oh why are they not all the same? Surely a loo is a loo is a loo!

OOI, if it is an original Armitage Shanks, it is probably solid hard plastic and very heavy. It can be put in the dishwasher which should bring it up very bright and clean.

In the dishwasher? Noooooo!

Could you just remove it and give it all a good scrub with bleach and an old toothbrush?

I once bought a toilet. I thought it was uk standard until I went to replace the seat. I had to call a plumber in the end who had to special order it from a trade store. £80 just for the seat. I decided if that seat broke, it would be cheaper to replace the entire toilet Grin

Only on mumsnet would someone advise washing someone else's toilet seat in your dishwasher. That's put me right off my breakfast....

I had no idea there were so many different sized toilet bowls/seats, do measure first. We have Armitage Shanks (fully aware they have many different sizes) , probably about 16 years old, this Wickes seat fitted, just replaced two.

Unfortunately it's a wooden loo seat otherwise I would be very tempted to put it In The dishwasher!

Have looked at that site for discontinued bathroom stuff and no joy - mind you some of their seats were £200+!

I can see myself replacing an entire bathroom just for the sake of a loo seat.

I'm looking for a replacement seat too and have had a bit of an issue.

I once had trouble finding a new seat for the loo in our new house. The previous owners had left a cracked wooden seat and I really didn't want to use it. The loo was shaped like a butternut squash and I eventually found one online for £99 Shock. I ended up getting a whole new loo from Wickes for half that price, including getting it fitted.

Thanks EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard. I've found my loo on that site which is progress and it has one toilet seat for sale which I've ordered!

Fingers crossed it will fit. My husband thinks I have lost the plot with my loo seat obsession!

I'm actually made up with that, thanks for letting me know Gorja. Hope you're very happy in your new home. It may be a work in progress, but you'll get there in the end.

I made a template of mine, with marks for fixings etc, so I could go to shops with it,
I failed to find one.
I looked online, and they were uber expensive.
Then my brother went into Carrefour and pick one up with his shopping, and it fitted perfectly. Ffs.
