Timeless kitchen design

We are replacing our dated and tired kitchen. I am completely stuck - should I stick to a shaker stylee or do something more interesting! If you were buying a house - what kind of kitchen would you LOVE to see when you walked through the door. I live in an edwardian house so there are plenty of period features, but the kitchen is in a more recent extension.

Any thoughts????
