DIY help needed please!

I'm in a new place, on my own but it doesn't have curtain tracks installed so I have been given the go-ahead to fit them myself, but I have no idea what I need to actually do it.

Will I need a drill to fix the screws? It'll be going into a 1" wooden baton that's fixed to the lintel.

Yes you will need to pre drill the holes - as the wood batten will split if you just screw in screws ...
