Relocating to Somerset

My husband has a new job covering Taunton, Bridgwater & Yeovil.
I know Bridgwater is not an option. But wondered if people could advise on nice areas in Taunton & What Wellington is like ? We had a coffee and a wander a few wks. ago and it appeared quite nice?
We are in Newton Abbot so not too far but not familiar with areas and what's going on . We like a local pub and my husband likes rugby. I know Chard , Crewkerne traffic is bad so not really been looking that way. We have a year to relocate 25 miles of Taunton (base) but ideally don't want to be in the middle of no where with no transport links. I will also be looking for a job (health related admin ) so need a good bus route really. Any advise much appreciated. My son is at 6th form so not worried about schools. Thanks Di

Not sure it fits all your requirements, but Wiveliscombe is a lovely small town about 20-30 minutes from Taunton. It has a good community feel and is between Taunton and Bridgwater.

yes, I had family at Wiveliscombe. There are some new developments, which seem more tightly packed, as well as a lot of older homes, some of them in the attractive reddish stone. I prefer it to Wellington but it must vary. If you can walk to the centre it is handier than parking.

Look for connections to the main roads.

It does rain a bit.

What about Ilminster?

traffic around Taunton town centre and the motorway junction is really bad, there are also frequent motorway accidents around the Bridgewater junctions. Add in summer traffic, Glastonbury & flooding and its not pleasant.

So if your husband is going into Taunton frequently it may be better for him if you lived in Taunton itself, on the outskirts with good buses or the park and ride routes.

If hes between all 3, and needs to be further out, then Id go for East of Taunton on the way to Yeovil. Its got the prettier villages, although I dont know what life there is.

I lived in Somerton growing up which is a lovely village and is pretty central for Yeovil, Taunton and Glastonbury. All the villages in that area are really pretty: Hambridge, Curry Rivel, Langport etc, but Somerton has good pubs, few shops, a village square and a proper community feel.
I'd go for a day out and have a drive round to get a feel for places stopping for coffee/refreshment breaks along the way! Good luck with it!
