Tiled flooring woes

Hi,

I've had a tiled floor in my hallway that I've always hated. Anyway I've decided to replace it with wood and started taking up the tiles last night. Anyway it seems that the tiles have been directly fitted onto the floor boards and are a nightmare to remove (not even removed one full one yet). In my bathroom they were laid on plywood over floorboards but I don't think these tiles are.

Will pulling up the tiles damage the floor boards? Will the remaining tile cement need to be removed to get an even finish? Is it easier to ignore the problem and lay the new flooring on top of the existing tiles?

My budget is v small and I will have to do any labour myself, I've only got the money for materials really. Any ideas what's best?

You can lay vinyl tiles on top of the tiles instead. At a small budget, polyflor is not expensive, but good.

What type of tiles are you removing. Be careful as some flooring tiles have asbestos in them

They are ceramic tiles, fairly modern. But just not that nice and I've lived with them a while now!
