Converting patio doors into a window?

We live in a bungalow. Prior to renovation the only access to our garden was through patio doors in our bedroom. Now that room is my DD's and we have access to the garden through the new living room so they are never used. It gets very hot in summer in the bedroom, and obviously we can't leave the door open for ventilation so we are considering changing it to a window. Anyone have any ideas on cost?

We may want to extend again later so trying to way up the cost. Considering leaving as is and installing a velux for ventilation.

I've tried google but everyone else seems to want to change windows into doors! I will of course call a builder but if it's way over our budget i don't want to drag some poor soul out here.

Would it work to put a fixed window into the bottom half and one you can open into the top half of the opening? Would mean less building work and, if you're looking to extend and need that doorway again, easier to reverse.

You may need building consent too. At least we did (they said it reduced the exits from the house). 🙄 In the event I'm pretty sure I would get through a ground floor window...

We did this in our now kitchen.

The window was £300 and the cill was £80. The brick was the best part of £100 from a reclamation yard, and it was tricky enough to find stuff that matched, but not too difficult. Mortar and stuff on top of that.

I did all of the brickwork, DH helped with the window fitting, but a pro could probably have done it all in a day or two. A 'handyman' might be a better bet so you aren't paying for about twice.

We have patio doors with a window panel either side (see photo). You could maybe change it to a single door and one window panel if it is not wide enough?
In our last house we had tilt and turn patio doors that you could open on the tilt

I like the idea of the solidbottom panel- coukd be cheaper! I've got a picture of the door now. As you will immediately notice it overlooks our garden crap dumping ground- another reason for wanting to build it up.

Also it annoys me that an entire wall in DD's bedroom is given over to the door. I want to put stuff in front of it!

But a solid panel could solve this!
