Is 'shabby chic' still a cool look for entire house?

I just love it but wonder if I'm 20 years behind the times?

I'm not sure it matters as long as you like it?

Of course it is! I visit so many different types of houses (estate agent 🙈) it's really an eye opener!
If you love it then that's all that matters!

personally I absolutely hate it - but its not my house. If you love it - go for it. its your home.

Define your notion of 'shabby chic'.

I suppose I'm dubious about anyone planning some kind of Total Theme for a house. My philosophy is paint the whole thing white and then put interesting things in, adding as many bookshelves as is humanly possible.

I moved into my new home 6 months ago - after being homeless for over a year and before that living with a controlling H.

First thing I did? I shabby chic'd the shit out of my kitchen Grin I have dreamt of it for years. I bloody love it. Every morning I walk into kitchen with fairy lights twinkling, sit on one of my different coloured kitchen chairs that have been distressed to within an inch of their life, look at the naff signs I have all over my wall - and I smile, no I beam, everytime I walk into my kitchen. It isn't to everyones taste, and fashions and trends may have moved on without me - but I fucking love it Grin

Do what you like OP, and enjoy it Smile

I think slavishly following a 'theme' is a bit naff, its like living in Disneyland. But if shabby chic, or whatever, is genuinely you and your things like sunnyoutside's bring joy to your life, then do it for your own pleasure!

I love it too and I don't give a shit if I'm 20 years behind the times.

I like what I like, and it's my house so bollocks to what anyone else thinks.

I spent a lovely Bank Holiday Monday shabby chic-ing a couple of crappy old wooden candlesticks I got in a charity shop for a pound each and if I do say so meself - they look fab!

I find the nicest homes I go into aren't always to my taste, but they are lovely because they have been done by people who love their decor and enjoy it. The worst houses to go into are those where people have followed fashion regardless of whether they like it or not. It is all show. No heart.

Fontella - that sounds like my ideal BH! If you live near me I need someone to do all this shit with Grin

Yes Hesterton "Try hard" houses that's how I think of them.

If you like the look go for it.

I think the next trend is the Downton Abbey look.

"Try hard" houses that's how I think of them.

Yes, they're the housing equivalent of a fashion victim who goes out and religiously buys the latest high street look, regardless of whether it suits her or whether she even particularly likes it, and you encounter her looking like a Top Shop window mannequin until it all starts looking dated and she junks the lot for the mid-season look and so on and so on.

And I agree with Hesterton. Sod fashion. Have what you love.

One of my absolute favourite houses belongs to a friend of mine - it's a tiny old terrace with a warren of tiny rooms, unpainted ancient plastered interior walls, books and geraniums everywhere and some fairly primitive kitchen and bathroom arrangements, but stuffed full of beautiful old things all there because its owner loves them. For a lot of people it would be a horror, but it's incredibly appealing because it so completely reflects the personality of its owner.

I don't worry about what's in fashion...my living room is more like an old western saloon at the moment, but I don't care what anyone else thinks. Go with what you like

I think it's evolved from the cream paint and wicker hearts to white mixed with dark wood furniture. But do what you love!

I'd agree with everyone saying do what you like - so much nicer if a house reflects its owner. That's my excuse anyway - I have stuff from my travels here there and everywhere and it's all stuff I love to look at. Happy memories.

Thanks everyone.
I just love the look because it's, clean, homely, & quite romantic ( like me Grin ) & yes, if I like it & the house is decorated with love, then that's all that matters.

Thanks again.

My garden is shabby chic style.

Picnic bench, random old door, picture frames, bunting, vintage signs and loads of mis-matched pots.

I just patio/gravel with loads of trees and ivy at the end.

I like it.

It's your house - it should be somewhere you love, who cares what anyone else thinks? Unless you are planning to renovate & sell, just do whatever makes you happy.

I like the pastel colours, gingham, florals and a few heart things aspects of shabby chic - but I don't have that look in my home.

I like painted furniture but really dislike 'distressed' paint effects. Just paint them nicely please!
