Meeting the neighbours

I realise this is probably a silly question so apologies in advance! DH and I are FTBs and are in the process of buying a maisonette. Our solicitor has strongly advised us to meet our upstairs neighbours before we exchange. How is this usually done? Do we e.g. just pop round and knock on the door and introduce ourselves, or drop a note in their letterbox with our contact details and suggest a time? Any ideas welcome!

I think it is really important to meet the neighbours. I personally would just knock at a suitable time on the weekend and just introduce yourself. Ask some questions about the road etc. You will get a good feel for them. Danger with putting a note through the door is that they may not contact you and then it may be a bit awkward when you move in.

Good idea IMO? We hope to buying a house that is next door to someone I worked with for 15 years! He's going to get a surprise!

Thanks NakedMum and definitely a good point about an ignored note creating awkwardness. I think we will go and knock on their door this weekend. JT05 - that's hilarious! Slightly nervous now that new neighbour will turn out to be an old boss or ex boyfriend Shock

Knock on the door, say "Hi, we're Fred & Wilma and we hope to be moving in shortly. Just wanted to apologise in advance if our van gets in the way on the day."
You can see how they react to that.
