Can I have alcove shelving at right angles?

I want to have alcove shelving by my fireplace but also a dresser or other shelving and base units on the wall that meets the alcove at right angles.

I'm not explaining this well and this is not exactly what we want but the closest image I can find and I've also attached a poor quality annotated photograph of that image showing what I mean.

Anyone think this is possible or will it make that side of the room too busy? We don't have any other walls on which to put the "dresser" and I think it's now the law that the alcoves beside the chimney breast must have shelving.

Btw, I should add that our chimney breast is quite shallow so I think my alcove shelving will need to be very narrow or does the law of alcove shelving permit the base units to jut out beyond the chimney breast?

shelves beside the chimeybreast will look unsightly if they stick out more.

I would have thought you could make it deep enough for books and knick-knacks.

You can just about get away with a deeper shelf at "desk height" or below.

I think with the dresser as well, the corner will be dark and cramped.

You do not have to have shelves in the alcove. You could put a small table and hang pictures, for example.

Thank you pigletjohn.

Can I just check that you mean that a base unit for the TV could just out but that the ones above desk height sould be smaller for books etc?

Yes, I take your point about making the space dark and cramped especially as it's the back of a north-facing room. This was my worry. I guess I need to re-think.

The TV is mostly the problem. Our TV is quite small and I really don't like TVs being focal in a room so wanted to sit it neatly on a shelf with other things.

I have alcove units with TV on then but not at right angles - would this work?

Yes, but I wanted to come around the corner with more units on the wall to the right of your TV. I've come to realise that doesn't work so am re-working the plans. Your alcove shelving looks lovely though and I see that your units protrude slightly beyond the fireplace and look perfect so your photo is a useful illustration of what pigletjohn said above.

Would the bit in the alcove cut across the corner kind of squaring / rounding it off?

I think it could work if the shelves across the back of the and finish flush with the flat part of the chimney breast
