I imagine the design of most UK houses don't have the space or ideal location for one. I certainly haven't.

The laundry baskets (4 large) are all at the top of the stairs, washing machine at the bottom so DC have to do the leg work of getting it from their rooms into the appropriate basket (colour sorted )

We were looking at building a house in Canada once upon a pipe dream and all the designs we looked at had laundry chutes and some type of vacuum cleaner socket on every room. Fab idea!

I would rather have a laundry room on the same floor as the bedrooms than have a laundry chute. I can't in this house as the floors aren't solid so it would be too noisy.

The alternative is to have a landing / stairs arrangement where you can throw everything over the edge...
But shout a warning first!

From what I can tell, it's a matter of sacrificing a landing cupboard in terms of size...Could this be the end of lost socks?!

No laundry chute but we have the remnants of a dumb waiter from our dining room to the old basement kitchen. Obviously we no longer need it being as we don't have a cook and scullery maid installed down there now to load steaming plates of food into it.

Yes we have one and I love it. DH designed it and the one in our previous bathroom.

It's very quiet and well-behaved though, no noise problems at all.

DH loved the central vacuums in america. He'd have it if he could. I would also have a laundry chute, or maybe a dumb waiter to get everything back upstairs again.

An architect friend has one in the house she designed , it goes down to the laundry room on the ground floor . She also has a dressing room with really well thought out cupboards and clothes rails, storage for suitcases (different sizes!) and what I really envy a "packing table", so she can choose what to pack , reach for the case, fold the clothes ....job done !
Super efficient process . I live in permanent total chaos by contrast ....

I don't get this. Washing isn't particularly heavy! My laundry baskets are upstairs and my washing machine downstairs. I often wish I didn't have to do endless bloody laundry, but it's never occurred to me to resent the 10 seconds it takes to carry a basket up or down the stairs rather than the much longer time it takes to sort, fold and put in drawers.

Don't have a laundry chute, but I have my washer and dryer upstairs which is even better IME

We are currently renovating a house we've just bought and I'm planning on putting in a laundry chute. Not because I need one particularly, there are only two of us and no plans for children, but just because I want one and because I can!

We are moving the bathroom so the current bathroom, almost below bedroom, will become the laundry/utility room and the chute will go from wall in bedroom down through wall space into laundry room.

If we hadn't knocked the walls down in this bedroom to replace them I wouldn't do it just for a laundry chute.

I thought DD was mad when she told me she was moving the washing machine upstairs but it works! Not only avoids carrying, or throwing, dirty laundry down stairs but there is always somewhere to fold the clean laundry, even if only on a bed. And, best of all, no clean washing to carry back upstairs.

Laundry chutes - the chute sends washing into a bloody huge basket at the bottom? Thinking of the 4x bedding Id be flinging in there.

I love the idea of a laundry chute. The stairs are the other end of our house to the kitchen. But wonder if socks would still go missing in it?

I quite like the idea if having the washing machine upstairs but DH cones hone on a Friday night with a ton of washing - first load goes on Friday night. Does it keep you awake running the washer upstairs at night? And I guess you just always tumble and never line dry? Although I'm getting carried away at the thought of a very high up washing line on a pulley coming through an upstairs window and back out again,so I can still line dry!!
