Stair carpet quote and stripes

Been quoted PS475 for a stair carpet (supply and fit, including underlay). This sounds way too much - what do you think? Its just the stairs, not the landing. We're in East Mids area.
Also I'm getting another (hopefully cheaper) quote from an local independent fitter, but he was saying that striped carpets (we were thinking of a striped one) don't work on stairs that have a return (ie you go up half way, then turn in the other direction to go up the last half). He said that "they" photoshop pictures in magazines to make it look good but that it doesn't work in real life.
Views? Thanks.

Not sure about the price, but I suspect he's right about the stripes thing...

Price depends on the price of the carpet surely so impossible to say.

We have stripes on our stairs and the are a kind of L shape.

I'm east mids and have just had striped carpet done on my stairs. My stairs had to be fixed first as some of the treads were breaking. Cost me £325 for stair fixing, underlay, grippers, fitting, the lot.

I've also got a turn, and chose to keep the stripes going straight, but I know my carpet fitter has done one recently where he cut the carpet to have a turn in it which looked awesome but I know it costs more.

This is mine. Stairs turn to the left at the top and I've just kept the stripes going straight.

A friend of mine had the same carpet fitter and he did it like this.

What's the breakdown of he quote? Carpet can be anything from 6 quid a sqm to 80 quid a sqm or more.

Another Hong to think about is hat a looped carpet is best for stripes carpets as it keeps the lines straight and neat. A non loop carpet can look fuzzy.

Sorry been away. Thanks for all responses, those pics look great. I misunderstood what the fitter said, he's fine with stripes! His quote came in a little less than the first, so it must be about right, although quite a bit more than yours JBJ. The carpets were both around £25/square meter. Still not quite found the right thing though - might try a big place like CarpetRight next.

Look at Online Carpets and find a fitter. We saved £200 off the price carpetright quoted us! They send samples to your home too

I have striped carpet in stairs, landing and in 2 of the bedrooms
I had a quote from Carpet Right and a quote from Leekes
The Leekes carpet was over £10 a metre
Carpetright gave me the quote there and then
Leekes took a few days as they had to programme it in the computer

The difference in overall quote was just £50, Leekes obviously the more expensive. They had worked it so there was very little waste

The fitter was brilliant and the stripes match from the landing into the bedrooms. It was just one man and he took his time and really cared about the job he was doing

Would thoroughly recommend having a quote from Leekes to compare

I get lots of comments and everyone who sees the carpet loves it

I found someone on checkatrade. Decent carpet in lounge/diner, upstairs, small lobby area, and landing came in at around £1200 last year. So your original price sounds a bit steep...

Sorry, that should say Leekes carpet was over £10 a metre more than the one from Carpetright

Am I being thick or is my PC not displaying properly? This is what I see from the OP
"Been quoted PS475 for a stair carpet". Now either PS475 is a code for something or my computer is on the blink. I don't want my computer to be on the blink - but I just can't fathom out what PS475 means??

Help (please)

For some people the £ (pound) sign is changing to PS!
