Smell from manhole cover

By my front door I have a manhole cover. Since yesterday there has been quite a strong smell of p*o wafting up. The bathroom is just to the left of the front door. The toilet appears to be working perfectly, no blockages or anything. Sometimes I have to flush a few times to clear the toilet of paper and the obvious but otherwise it seems okay. There is another manhole cover about 15 feet away on the driveway nearer to the road but I can't smell anything from that one. My property is detached if that makes any difference.

Any advice please?

I'd suggest lifting the cover for a look. If there is a strong smell it would suggest a blockage even if it hasn't backed up into the house yet. First we knew of a blockage in our old house was the outside drain floating poo and toilet paper across the yard. Inside it seemed fine.

You can grease the cover with manhole grease to make it more airtight and prevent smells. Might be worth lifting the cover and making sure it's not partially blocked.

Jeremy Corbyn collects manhole covers, he could raise the question in the House.

Are you Gail from Coronation St?

Could it be Callum in your man hole?

Sorry- no help at all I know but it was the first thing I though of.

Hopefully someone sensible can advice you.

Lift and look for blockages, the the manhole is probably for rainwater hence no smell.

As an aside you shouldn't need to flush several times unless you have tummy trouble?

Ha ha, I'd forgotten about Callum. Think I'll leave it til the morning in case the smell hasn't killed him and he jumps out.

Will definitely leave it til the morning. The cover seems to be stuck so will get some big screwdrivers or something tomorrow and try and get it up. There's no handles or anything on it to pull it up. Also I'd better not start doing something now that I know I won't get finished by the time it gets dark.

Had a lot of trouble getting it up but finally managed it a short while ago. It's absolutely fine, nothing in there. What the hell! I've flushed the toilet a few times with the manhole cover off and been running some taps and everything is ok. Took the cover off the other manhole that's on the drive and that too was clear. Both manholes were smell-free so can't work out what would have caused the smell yesterday. Oh, well, hopefully everything's ok.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Farmer spreading muck?? The smell hits you as you walk outside usually, then you get more used to it.

My neighbour blocked the drains, we know because their loo roll gave them away. Everything got blocked further down and another neighbour had to clear it all. I discovered this a few days after I smelled bad smells. I worked out it was the contents of our drain that perplexed the cleaning neighbour, who said "I cleared it all, then five minutes later more came down the pipes, this time it was white loo roll" The middle neighbour doesn't use white paper and I do.

My guess is someone further down has had their rods or dynorod out, cleaning the pipes.
