have a smallish mound of earth in the back garden, it is rock hard, very compact clay like soil though. Just trried to gig it out and spade won't even go in it, as it is small seems expensive to hire a digger... any ideas

Pickaxe and a skip.

It will be softer underneath where it is not so dry.

I will guess it is subsoil which somebody dug out to lay a patio or shed base or something. In which case it will do the garden no good if you spread it around.

piglet you are exactly right, it is soil that was dug out when we had our extension done and has been sat in a mound in the garden ever since. Tried growing a wild flower area on it which worked for a bit but the dip at the back encouraged frogs as so wet
