What would make you eligible to apply for social housing?

We are currently in private rental and its very expensive! Someone suggested we apply for social housing?

I'm fairly sure that anyone can apply, but you might wait for months, or more likely years.

Even if it is a wait for years it's still worth it for us that are the generation rent

I was under the impression that anyone can apply, but you're given a priority, and when properties become available they are offered to the person with the highest priority - so you might wait forever....?

From speaking to others I believe (but may be wrong), that the list is constantly changing based on priority, so if you're judged low priority you'll get bumped down the list by some high priority even if you've been on the list longer. So theoretically you could be on the list for the rest of your life and never get a house. Happy to be told I'm wrong though.
