noise driving me up the wall!

A few months ago it started. Think of an industrial fan sound 24 hours a day.

When it began I thought it was a temporary thing - maybe a broken air con on an adjoining building, or some fan going on nearby building works. Its been six months now, non stop. Whirrrrrrrrrr - never varies or pauses.

We are in flats and I just can't pinpoint the source when I get to street level. It just wasn't there before - I had some recordings which I made last summer of me reading lecture notes (so I could play them when commuting) and all you can hear in the background is the little birdies tweeting.

It's so hot now but if the windows are open it sounds like I'm sitting in a bus station. I can hear of over the TV with my windows closed.

Can environmental health help? Which sodding engineer/architect/builder decided that something that noisy is OK in a residential area?

I am getting really hacked off! Make it stop!

Are you near any takeaways or restaurants? They will have large extraction systems and should get them cleaned out annually for fire safety because of the build up of grease. A side effect of grease build up is increased noise. I used to work in commercial property management.

Get on to EH at the Council and keep a diary of the noise.

DO you have a Time machine back up?

They do that a lot.

It would need to be a bloody huge one on a rooftop somewhere!

There are a couple of new developments nearby and also building works on some office blocks, so I cant be sure the origin of it - you know when a sound echo's around and sometimes it sounds like its coming from one spot, then another?

I'm sure some sod has put an aircon on a roof of a hotel of block of flats. It used to be so quiet here (despite bring really central)! What gives someone the right to steal my silence??

What do other residents say? Put leaflets through their letterboxes asking what they think.

Sadly they all rent and dont give a stuff. Chiperfields could move their elephants in and nobody would bat an eyelid as long as they paid the rent. One side is a hotel and the other is an air bandb type place.

Hotel's your likely culprit. I'd have a chat with the manager and ask him or her where their plant is. It's probably on the roof. Try and find out when the aircon, etc was last serviced.

Last time we had something lime this it was ndeed their fan on a low roof. This time it sounds as if its a bit further away.

Often plant is screened off and it might be a combination of what is whirring away plus vibration of the screening and air/wind resistance.

I won't make a good Doctor's companion.
