Living room paint ideas

We are having our living room/lounge painted in August and I need to choose some colours, despite not having chosen carpet, furniture or curtains yet, so I am looking for suggestions of colours which will be fairly neutral without being magnolia. We are having a wood burning stove installed (hoping it will look like photo attached) - and I like the idea of making that wall a 'feature wall' with a contrasting colour to the other 3 walls. I have also included a photo of the room as it is now. I am hoping for a cosy contemporary look. The house is 15 years old and we are redecorating/renovating the whole house. In our kitchen/living area we have used Farrow and Ball Cornforth White and Elephant's Breath - following advice from mumsnetters thank you :)

Try Craig and Rose 'Moonstone Grey' It is a lovely colour,doesn't jar with anything and looks very classy. Also touches up brilliantly. When we lived in France we had it sent over from England and everyone wanted to know what it was and where they could get it. I am about to use it again in my large south facing living room,and I know it will look stunning. It is a very old established company,and is available from B and Q. Try a tester.

Have used moonstone grey too - it's fab !! Works well with bright white - for a crisp look - but also works with cream for a more cottage /shabby chic /French sort of look too !

I love Dulux Egyptian Cotton. Contrasts well with white ceilings and woodwork and works well with brights and neutrals.

What direction does the room face, ie what kind of light does it get naturally, and what is outside your window?

For example, if your room is north facing and doesn't get much sun you might want a warmer sunnier tone inside to compensate, and if you have a lot of foliage outside your light may already be a bit green.

Work with the quality of light you have to create the light you will enjoy for the time of day you most use the room.

Just seen your pic showing the window. I would paint the skirting the same colour as the walls and the ceiling the same colour as the coving.

If I were you I'd go for a pale bright duck egg ceiling and warm stone walls. This will make the view from your window jump into life vividly.

Thank you all, the room faces NNW so doesn't get much natural light. It faces onto a lawn and hedge, so a lot of green. The room is mostly used in the evening with curtains drawn though, but perhaps when it looks nicer we will use it more in the daytime, I hadn't thought of the natural light aspect. I will also be looking at this Moonstone grey colour following two recommendations! Thanks for advice ????

Yy to craig & rose, i have stone by hombase, its a little darker than dulux natrual hessian, is warm but not to dark, also recommend mylands paint
very hardwearing & goes on really well, nice soft sutble colours, can get online or through brewers, or if any where near south london, direct from the factory.
