Cutting a hole in crazy paving?

I have that awful 70s crazy paving in my front garden, set behind a waist high single skin wall with those black curly metal railings on top. I'd like to remove a single slab of stone next to the wall so I could plant a rose that I could train along the railings. Anyone know how to do this? I have no idea what's under the paving, it's quite possible there's a layer of concrete or something. My garden is raised up from street level so it's possible there's all sorts of crap underneath.

you can probably lift it with a spade

if it is crazy and made of broken (not square) slabs it might have a bit of mortar underneath to level it but is unlikely to be on a concrete slab.

the paving beside your hole will be loosened and will settle.

Next to the wall will not be a good place to plant because it will be very dry and probably rubbly.

Consider also a large tub.
