Pull out larders ~ yay or nay?

Are they a bit marmite? Reading on here I get very mixed views, but idk if those that like theirs have something in common with their design that makes them work well. Likewise, I'm wondering if those that dislike theirs have a reason for doing so that is specific to the particular design.

If you DONT like yours..what is it that goes wrong?

If you DO like yours...where Is It from?! Smile

Nay.

We have one pull out larder and one standard and I much prefer the standard larder and can stack tons of stuff in there without worrying that I'm overloading it. The pull-out one doesn't feel very robust so I put light stuff in there. Ours is from Howdens.

Ours is from Ikea and I love it! It holds loads and saves space in our tiny kitchen. The best thing about it is being able to see all the jars etc instead of having to rummage through loads that are stacked in a cupboard.

Totally agree with Pointless. Wouldn't be without mine.

Love mine. It stores so much in so little space, and I have access from both sides to easily reach ingredients. It's right by the hob, where I need it. I bought it from DIY Kitchens and the quality is very good. It's gets opened and shut about 6 times a day; we have had it for 7 years and no issues what so ever.

Ikea and very small kitchen here as well. Love it.

Had one in my last house and it was wonderful. I will have one in my next kitchen. It held such a lot of tins and jars. Never had any problems with it either.

I have a tall cupboard with pull out drawers instead - miles cheaper

I have all larder units with individual pull out drawers, both base cabinets and a tall one.

Base cabinets have the bottom drawer attached and hidden drawers inside, larder unit is just a tall cabinet with individual drawers, nothing is attached to the door on that.

All cabinets were from Ikea before they changed to the Metod system but they will still do them.

I like not having to reach over something to get to something at the back, I never lose things either.

I think pull outs are good but would go for separate drawers or wire baskets over one big pull out.

Basically when you pull out a drawer, you can see everything in it from above. Presumably when you pull out an all-in-one larder you can only see from the side/front? So they are probably OK up to about 400mm wide.

I love my larder cupboard! It's 500mm wide and holds alot.

I have two tall, 12" wide pullout ones and they are wonderful. We can see exactly what we have and nothing gets lost at the back

The company who fitted them warned us about overloading them but said that would mean filling them top to bottom with tins so they are sturdy enough for everyday use with a range of things in (ours have tins, packets of nuts and snacks, cereals, biscuits, tea, coffee, etc in)

IKEA floor to ceiling cupboards with pull out drawers here. They are 60cm wide, from the METOD/MAXIMERA range. Drawers are rated to 20kg - I put 13kg DD in one and it didn't budge an inchGrin

Agree with PP who said that 40cm would be about the Max width for a traditional pull out as you couldn't see what's in the middle. With drawers you can see everything. My sister has a pull out larder with wire baskets and stuff falls out every time you open it but that may be her packing....

We have a tall pull out larder and it is brilliant. It is the first thing I would get in a new kitchen. Brilliant for all those little bits like spices etc as you can see them all.
It was from wickes I think.

In my Ikea one the top and bottom shelves are attached to the door so pull out when you open it but all the other shelves pull out separately like shallow drawers so you can see everything from above. I write on the lids of herbs and spices so I don't have to lift them all out to read the labels.

We have one in the house we're renting and I always liked the idea of them before. In reality, it's hopeless. Ours is a wide one (ie normal cupboard width) rather than a slim one. I find that it actually makes things harder to find, you can see round the edges alright but anything in the middle you can't see and is awkward to get to with the shelf above blocking it as well.
It pisses me off having to walk round the damn thing all the time too to see which side something's on.
Plus, although it actually seems ok, it doesn't FEEL robust.
I'd never get one myself now. I can see that a slim one would work better than a wide one but still not as good as a normal cupboard.

Just about to have a new kitchen, and a pull out larder was top of my list. Had to go up a range to get one. My Mum's got one and she loves it, all the food fits in and you can see everything easily. It's a really good use of a fairly narrow space imo.

Please can someone explain these marvellous things to me? I have a very tiny kitchen and I am absolutely desperate for storage solutions, preferably Ikea. However, I can only fit the 37cm deep cupboards down the wall where it could go. Is this a problem?

Another yes vote from me. Had them in a previous house and was a big improvement on traditional cupboard. Unfortunately I don't know where it was from.

I'd LOVE one.

Hated mine. Had it ripped out after a couple of months. Nothing like Marmites though. It was basically a set of wire shelves which pulled out. You couldn't stack anything especially glass jars or they would fall off when you pulled the whole thing out. We were able to store far more stuff on basic shelves.

shove my larder is very much like this one. Even though it is only 30cm wide it holds ever such a lot. Everything is easy to find and easy to reach.

www.diy-kitchens.com/storage/larder-pullouts/kessebohmer-kalf300sc/wp1017045/#.VYAc02BIZ8M

The cabinet that mine is in, is 57cm deep. The wire larder itself is only 48cm deep.

lalalonglegs · 16/06/2015 16:28

shoveholly - I'm pretty sure that Ikea do the tall cupboards in 37cm depth and do internal drawers as well so should be possible.

Report
camelfinger · 16/06/2015 17:12

Yay. But the cupboard with pullout wire drawers rather than one where you have to open the whole the big at the same time. My parents have one of those which broke quite quickly owing to the weight. Mine is from ikea and you can fit loads in and see the contents easily.
