Corby, is it really that bad?

Hello, i have posted a thread about a couple of places we are looking at moving to, we don't want to be more than an hour and 15 out of London as most of DH's work is there.

We did look at Lincolnshire, Notts and Northamptonshire. We have been on the market for just over three months ( not that long i know ) and have had a couple of second viewings but nothing doing so far.

We had a look at some new builds that were offering part ex in the Northamptonshire area and a couple of nice houses were on David Wilson sites. I have been to Corby once a few months ago but couldn't really spend any time there - please can someone advise if it a complete no- no or not? I had a look for some old threads and the general consensus seems to be that its horrid.

That said i have read that it has undergone some regeneration, i used to live in Swindon which also has a rep as a bit of a shit-hole so I'm wondering if Corby actually isn't that bad or if its reputation is deserved?

I really want to move before Sept as DC's schooling and College could be tricky, part ex'ing would solve the problem but there doesn't seem to be much new build wise around in N'hants that have a house big enough for us ( 5 dc's) hence why the Corby estate came up, when i visited a few months ago it was on the outskirts ( although you had to go through a massive industrial estate to get to it) and it seemed ok.

Advice would be really gratefully received! Grin

I haven't been for years but I think it is still very deprived. Why not Market Harborough or Leicester. Leicester is 66 min on direct train.

I must admit when I saw thw subject line, I immediately imagined a town regeneration plan, or possibly a tourism campaign, with that as the tag line.

I'm surprised you are looking at Lincolnshire, too, though. Parts of it are lovely, but my experience is that travel to/from London takes ages and is eyewateringly expensive.

The great Oakley area of Corby is nice, Corby old village and Stanion. Surrounding villages are lovely.

I don't think it is horrid at all. Every town has good areas and bad areas. Corby has had a lot of regeneration since the steelworks.

There are a lot of nice places near by too, there's Foxton Locks, Rockingham castle, Uppingham, Rutland Water, Stamford, Twywell and loads more i'm not currently thinking of. I don't live there anymore as I moved after I went to University.

OP you sound like you've down the exact search that I have been doing although we're relocating from abroad. I loved the Redrow development in Kettering but it didn't look like we'd get places for my primary aged children so we're now part ex'ing on a house in Oakham near Rutland Water. We looked at the David Wilson houses in Corby and I really like them but again I wasn't sure on schools. Oakham on the other hand seems to have very good schools with potential places Smile have you looked there? It has a train station with direct trains to St Pancras.

Have a look at Bedfordshire too - trains under 30 mins to Euston from Leighton Buzzard, nice town, not too expensive.

I am thinking of downsizing and moving to Liverpool so I can be close to sea and be closer to my daughters one in liverpool the other in manchester.
Could anyone help eith nice areas to live my budget is around £230000
Iam open to small terraced, bungalow or a flat but if in a flat would like to be close to allotments to make up for not having a garden.
So just need somewhere safe a d some local facility's such as local shops and pubs as long as it has good transport to city centre.

How funny this post should pop up faster so many years as I was about to ask this very question. Is Corby, Northamptonshire really that bad? I have been looking at some lovely houses there but I've heard the odd thing that makes be wonder.

I grew up in one of the surrounding villages in the 80s/90s. It had a hell of a reputation - bad enough that I would be surprised if it's changed that much in 20-odd years.

I would second Uppingham, Market Harborough, Oakham (in Rutland, but not too far away), Kettering, umm... well, pretty much anywhere but Corby!

Ah, it's a zombie thread! I wonder where OP moved to in the end.

@Gman1, you need to start your own thread. This one you've just resurrected is just going to get you advice on Corby (which is nowhere near Liverpool).

@Gman1 you’ll need to start your own thread as this one will just attract more comments about Corby!
