Infuriatingly useless solicitor

So, I went with an online firm (but not the cheapest by a long stretch) and they have been useless. We are now more than 6 weeks into what should have been a very simple transaction (cash buyers; no chain on either side), having said we would exchange in 28 days. As far as I can tell, all the delays are my solicitor's. I'm so, so worried the purchase will fall through due to this.

I paid her bill nearly 3 weeks ago thinking we were about to exchange. How naive was I! Since then she had alternated days of no contact with 'just one more thing to sign', most of which I'm sure should have been picked up sooner. After a huge amount of cajoling she said she would try to exchange tomorrow but I just know she won't do it. I haven't paid the stamp duty yet - not for lack of trying!

I have managed to get through to her on the phone once (again - not for lack of trying and being fobbed off by her PA) and she was very unhelpful and asked what did I expect her to do, drop everything?! Well, errr... yes! I understand she has other clients (probably way too many) but her inaction is seriously putting the purchase in jeopardy.

What can I do? What should I do tomorrow morning? I can't concentrate on my work and have literally been tearing my hair out with the stress. I don't think I can take much more of this.

contact the senior partner and repeat all this, stating what you want done and when. (i.e now)
