Property/DIY

does this seem a lot to do up the front of our house?

we're in London. it's a semi-detached georgian house with 3-4 floors (basement light well and 3 floors above ground). the front is really shabby and we want someone to repair the cornices, which are chipped, then paint the masonry, window frames and door as well as a gate, railings, and the low wall in front. we have been quoted £5820 (PLUS £2450 for the scaffolding), which is not broken down at all into days or jobs.
Doesn't that seem an awful lot? they come recommended by a friend so I was hoping to use them instead of finding someone cold.

We have a 4 storey victorian house, in London, 17 windows and 4 doors so not sure how that compares, and we paid 3k for scaffold and 6k for decorating and repairs. It took almost a month and was the cheapest quote I got, the most expensive being nearly 15! I'd get a breakdown of what's included eg stripping back paint, repairing, how many coats of primer/top coat etc so you know what you are getting. The scaffold is the big cost so we also got roof repaired and repointing done whilst it was up.

Ps assumed that was for front and back but if just the front then yes, it is expensive!

I'm in SW London, I've just had 2 quotes to redo the internal cornice in one room. Just one room. And it's come to 4.5k both times! Your quote sounds fine to me. Scaffolding is expensive.

Madam I can pm you the name of the company I used if you like, we are SE London and they SW, but they work across all postcodes. Our scaffold was 3 sides of house so would have thought yours should be closer to 2k mark. Also any company should break it down, so you can see what's pushing the price up. They should also gives you an estimate of timeframe.
