Where is a nice rural place to live?

We want to move from the dirty old city, we want a nice house with a wee bit of land in a pretty village or nearby.Due to the fact my husband works from home we can just about live anywhere, this has given us TOO much choice and we can't seem to make a decision so... If you could live anywhere where in the country would it be?

Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire? Somewhere with good broadband and mobile signal if working from home! I live in a rural area and my broadband is slow and only one mobile phone company provides a signal. Also look for a good micro climate.

Small Budget! £200,000 to £250,000. So needs to be cheap and beautiful! ;-)

You'll get a big house for that in the NE. Northumberland is nice too.

I like the idea of Northumberland, parts of it are very beautiful and the coast is lovely there. :-)

Northumberland is lovely, but stay around Alnwick, Hexham etc. Don't look at Blyth, Ashington, Cramlington etc.

Herefordshire is beautiful, mid Wales is beautiful, cheap, but rains far more. The 50 miles between my old house and Hereford makes a huge difference to both house prices and the weather.

All the welsh borders, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Ross, Monmouth are pretty. Broad band and Mobile signals are very variable.

I'm not especially in the wilds compared with a lot of Shropshire and Herefordshire, but I'm on the end of a lousy long bit of copper.

Cornwall is pretty, unfortunately cheap is grotty inland bits. Would check what the schools are like too as high unemployment sadly exiles many brighter Cornish people upcountry. (I'm married to one).

The Highlands? Argyl and Bute? So many lovely areas and plenty for your money! Plus good schools if you have dc.

Buy a flat within the M25 and use the rental to fund a property elsewhere in the country. At least for two to three years until you know this arrangement works for you. Then you have the option of coming back if the business dries up or if you don't like it.

What about the Scottish Borders? They're building a railway from Galashiels to Edinburgh so soon there will be excellent transport links to the rest of the world for a truly beautiful area. Lots of English folk up here who are v well integrated. Peebles isnot on the new railway line but is 30mins from Edinburgh and gorgeous.

Worcestershire is lovely well connected etc, but it can be pricey.

Welsh boarders seems to get you loads for your money.

Are you in the Highlands? I have always fancied it round there, any suggestions of villages/towns if so? Would be great to be near the coast.

Came on to say Scotland - the whole place (well almost) but perhaps Fife would suit you. Close to edinburgh airport and lots of coast + rural spots. I'd avoid the newer development in Dunfermline and some parts can be grotty but you'd certainly get something in that budget. No idea on broadband + mobile though.

I think the above suggestion of buying then renting out within M25 is a very sound one.
