What fence is mine?

We rent privately, landlord lives in Ukraine at present. During the winds 3 fence panels on the right hand side (if stood facing the house) have blown down. The landlord doesn't know what side we are responsible for.

How would I find out please?

You could start with the title deeds via landregistry.gov but that will cost you. Ask neighbours perhaps otherwise.

Convention says if the posts are on your side it is yours.

You (ie the landlord) are usually responsible for the fence on your left, as you stand with your back to the house. However, this isn't the case at my DMs house, according to her deeds, so you'd need to check.

Lagoonablue isn't quite right - the fence posts would normally be on the side of the house that DOESN'T own the fence - so that the "nice" side is on the owner's side. However, not all fences have sides in that way - some posts are flush with the panels.

You'd need to check the deeds to find out who owns the back fence, as it's fairly arbitary.

Your neighbours might know, particularly if you're on a street where the houses were all built at the same time (ie housing estate, row of semis/terrace etc) - will be the same rule for all in that kind of situation.

It's the landlords problem though, not yours, though appreciate you probably want the fence fixed. Can he call his mortgage provider and ask them to check the deeds?

Our fence is constructed so that our neighbours have the "nice" side, so you can't always go by that.

As a landlord, I know it is the landlord's problem. However, you could agree to get the work done and then agree an appropriate reduction in monthly rent by negotiation. In one house I own the fence on the left as you stand at the rear facing window is my responsiblity, but in the other house the ownership and responsibility is shared. I have also repaired the fence that is not mine as the next door neighbour is some sort of idiot who will not repair anything. The landlord should know what he is responsible for, abroad or not.

The fence on our left (back facing) has been done by next door but has our gate on the end. The one on the right is the one that's fallen.

Will speak to the landlord again and get it sorted.

I live in the house which was last built on my estate. The fence which is on my right when my back is to the house was built in front the brick garden wall of the old terrace house next door therefore I have assumed that this belongs to my house. This makes the fence on my left next doors. Is it possible for you to do a walk down the street and work it out like this.
